BOOM BLOX, is the first game developed in collaboration between two giants of multimedia entertainment, Electronic Arts and director/producer, Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is obviously a master storyteller and so knows a thing or two about blockbusters, but he also no stranger to the gaming world. A long-time gamer himself, he conceived the original idea behind Lucas Art?s PC/Mac title The Dig, but busting these BLOX is an entirely new concept.
Levels and Levels of FunA Puzzle/Action game inspired by Spielberg's own search for a game that he would enjoy playing with his own kids, BOOM BLOX is designed specifically with the strengths and versatility of the Wii in mind. In it players can look forward to a fast-paced gameplay blending the simplicity of the wildly popular block game Jenga and the crazy complexity of a Rube Goldberg machine--devices that although performing very simple tasks are designed to do it by the most complicated means possible.BOOM BLOX features over three hundred levels, a variety of activities, a cast of over thirty wacky characters, and an easy-to-use in-game editor that allows players to express their creativity. It?s visceral gameplay is perfectly suited for the Wii?s interactivity. The action gets going fast and the fun never ends as you throw baseballs, blast lasers, save wacky animal characters, explore cool worlds and more!... making it the ultimate Wii blox-buster for 2008.Features:
- Throw, grab, and blast your way through 300+ levels - Use fun action gestures and crazy virtual tools (like bowling balls, baseballs and fire hoses) to destroy your way through over 300 brain-twisting challenges.
- Fast-paced Multiplayer Action - Fun for kids and the entire family, BOOM BLOX offers action-packed interactive activities that takes Wii play to a new level of creativity and fun with single player, co-op, and versus gameplay. Up to 4 players at once.
- Over 30 Wacky Characters set in 5 Unique Worlds - Tackle the action and interact with entertaining characters such as the Blox-laying chickens or the baseball throwing monkeys, who bring personality to the Tiki, Medieval, Frontier, and Haunted themed environments.
- Make It Your Own/Share ? Unlock characters, worlds, blox, and props throughout the game and use to build whatever you can imagine in Create Mode. You can virtually build anything you can dream up. Remix any level and share what you create with friends via WiiConnect24TM.
Built upon a full real-time physics model, each player's BOOM BLOX experience can be as easy or difficult as you want it to be. Additionally, players can remix any level of the game in Create Mode using props, blocks, or characters that have been unlocked during the game. Players can also virtually build anything they can dream up. This makes for nearly endless play and replay options in what promises to be the latest must-have Wii title for the entire family.

For me, I am particular towards the multiplayer aspects of Boom Blox. That is, I wanted to play this game with my friends/family - and preferred everyone participating together than sitting around taking turns. Thus, although Boom Blox supports a handful of 4 player games, I was disappointed when many of them only worked while taking turns. Furthermore, the shooting games where everyone could play simultaneously were even more disappointing because the game frame lags a lot with all the blocks bursting into [unnecessary] effects. However, as I found later, you can "edit" any level (or create your own) which allows you to speed up the game while taking turns (by reducing the timer to, for example, 5 seconds a turn) and change the weapons used to switch up the gameplay. This helped fix the earlier disappointment in which I found people got antsy as people really took their time (read: 40 seconds) planning their moves.
Although the 4 player mode was somewhat lackluster, the 2 player mode was really great. Granted, it makes for less of a party game when only two people can participate - but many of the games are simultaneous and makes for exciting gameplay. There is both a cooperative and competitive route for the 2 player mode - both which are exciting in their own way. The cooperative games require, surprise, cooperation - but often, the task is rather challenging and thus, requires the players to really work together or face the "Try Again" screen. The competitive games were simply games in which you and your buddy fought against each other, usually to destroy a building or score the most points. Either way, the two player modes are really worth the multiplayer aspect of the game.
Lastly, the single player mode will really test your skills. There are many tasks that you are expected to complete - often using only a single baseball or while protecting several innocent kittens from a Halloween army (your arm will tire). I found that revisiting a game after a week or two allowed you to overcome the challenge of getting gold on every task - an extra that grants you very powerful weapons. Again, you can edit any level just to play around with different weapons, blocks, decoration, characters, etc.
To cut this short, Boom Blox is really worth the purchase. Younger kids can delight in the "boom" of everything falling off, while older players can aim to score higher points and complete the challenges that may be too hard for the young (there are many). I hope that you enjoy the game as much as I will continue to - and have a great day!
When I try to explain Boom Blox to people, it just doesn't go well. You can't really explain how fun it is to topple half of a friend's castle with one throw, get thousands of points by blasting targets that can become tiny dots even on a 50" TV, or getting just the right angle to send a block into the 10x multiplier. I always end up saying, "You just have to play it." It's a tribute to the game that I've had at least three people who had never played it before say they were going to immediately order a copy.
You actually don't just throw things: there are also grabber tools and a myriad of special blocks and tools you use to accomplish tasks from simply knocking point blocks to the ground to deconstructing elaborate structures by grabbing blocks one at a time without letting baby cows fall to the ground. Trust me, it makes sense once you play. There are several types of play, so you won't get bored with just one.
Single-player can get repetitive unless you're a compulsive who just has to finish everything (like me). Multiplayer is what makes the game really come alive: both the gamesmanship (and even anger) that comes out during competitive play and one of the most basely satisfying co-op experiences out there. The higher levels are genuinely challenging without being terribly frustrating. The three-tier scoring helps out a lot: gold is for people who just have to have all gold and silver and bronze are for those who just want to play through the game for fun.
The single player is the only reason the overall game gets four stars; I couldn't, in good conscience, give the "fun factor" of the game anything less than a five.
Pros:
- Fantastic party game
- Controls are easy to pick up
- Variable levels of achievement allow even casual gamers to advance
Cons:
- Single player can get repetitive
- Competitive multiplayer could be larger
