This is probably the third time that Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon has shared his original masters with a re-issue label. The last time was 2000 when Varese Sarabande issue two CDs, the first the Swan 45s, the second the later WB sides. Both of these CDs were remastered at Digiprep, the sine qua non of remastering studios (the Complete Stax Volt Singles on Atlantic) by Dan Hersch. The first was sonically limited but far, far superior to the current 2009 Shout release where the Swan sides - putting aside the inevitable surface noise of 78s - sound worse dynamically than many 78s from the 40s and 50s (and even the 20s!!!!). Really poor quality - unless you like your CDs precompressed for dubbing to mp3.I'd hoped for better. If you want Freddy Cannon - look for the Swan Years on Varese Sarabande 302 066 111 2 and the WB years on Varese Sarabande 302 066 341 2

FREDDY CANNON-BOOM BOOM ROCK & ROLL/THE BEST OF: Massachusetts native FREDDY "BOOM BOOM" CANNON had two indelible trademarks, a penchant for inserting a shouted "WHOO!" and a crashing drum beat into all his late 50s/early 60s hits, hence his nickname. Retro label SHOUT has packaged all his energy-charged chartbusters, with not a syrupy ballad in the pack. The CHUCK BARRIS-penned PALISADES PARK, tongue twister BUZZ BUZZ A-DIDDLE-IT, and hip teacher ditty ABIGAIL BEECHER are almost impossible not to shout along with, let alone shake your sacroiliac to. TRANSISTER SISTER and THE DEDICATION SONG are nostalgic, fiesty odes to AM radio, while his 1981 single LET'S PUT THE FUN BACK IN ROCK & ROLL, backed by THE BELMONTS (minus DION) is one of the most joyous comeback efforts ever waxed. Ringing guitars, kitschy subject matter, and above all FREDDY CANNON's raw, spirited vocals make this collection a must own for any baby boomer's personal jukebox.

RATING: FIVE WHOO!'S

I loved this music as it reminds me of summers growing up in the 60's. I'm a baby-boomer and this is my type of music. I can still picture my friends and me dancing to this music at dance parties, sock hops, and school dances. We had such fun and it brings back such wonderful memories. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys the music of the 60's time period(the early 60's).

I ordered this cd for my grandma who is a HUGE fan. I surprised her by ordering it and having it shipped to her house. She called me as soon as it arrived in the mail and she was ecstatic. A week later she called to let me know how much she was in love with her cd. She listens to it every week when her and my grandpa make their hour drive out to the casino :-) I will repurchase when she wears a hole in the one I just bought her :-)

I saw a story on him in Rockabilly magazine and thought I'd
give it a shot but it's not what I thought. It's a little to
poppy and silly for me and doesn't rock enough. I'm sure people
who grew up listen to him would love it cause it's not bad.

One other reviewer--younger, new-to-Freddy--says it: "It's a little too poppy and silly for me and doesn't rock enough." Freddy might have been "Boom-Boom" but, despite teen slice-of-life themes (Abagail Beecher, Patty Baby, Teen Queen of the Week) Cannon was rarely "Rock `n' Roll."

Cannon came closest to R `n' R with his first two releases in 1959, Tallahassee Lassie and Okefenokee. It wasn't just the arranging that made him "pop", it was the material, too; what other chart-topper of the day recorded vintage songs from bygone eras such as Muskrat Ramble, Way Down Yonder in New Orleans and Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy? It says some fascinating things about late 50s and early 60s hit music that one of the three (Chattanooga) made Top Ten and the other two made Top Forty, something that rockin' Okefenokee didn't do.

So, this collection is misnamed. But, I can shrug that off. As a kid, I was really fascinated by the SOUND of these records more than the material--Okefenokee really pumps, and Palisades Park--barely 2 minutes long--exists in a sonic world of its own. But Freddy's not responsible for this.

Song writer-arrangers Frank Slay and Bob Crewe (who went on to greater fame via The Four Seasons) deserve the credit for much of what you hear and--if you're my age-- still fondly remember. They get no accolades here, though: Freddy thanks everybody from his parents and DJs to his fans...but not these two guys. Curious, that.

I hunch that Crewe, perhaps especially, was having a good time exploring music styles. It's these explorations that make lesser-known tunes such as Humdinger (#59 ) and The Urge (#60) such a delight. Crewe digs a band and back-up singers and, therefore, allows us to dig them as well. Oh, yeah: Freddy's there, too! So thanks to Frank, Bob and the Indefatigable Freddy Cannon. It ain't (totally) Rock and Roll--but I like it.

...buy the album - I brought FROM the album. I bought three songs from the album - Action, Palisades Park, and Way Down Yonder In New Orleans - which I think are Freddy Cannon's three best songs.
