Don't get me wrong, the price is excellent, the sound quality is top notch, and the bluetooth works great too. My problem is that I paid extra for the "PRO" version, which comes with 2GB of onboard storage so I can upload mp3's to it and listen to songs without killing my phone's battery.
Unfortunately that's where the problems start.
Trying to enter "flash mode" is unintuitive. You have to start the device, then hit the power button twice more. This turns the light from blue to purple. If you then hit play, the device will play the same songs in the same order; organized by filename, every single time. So how do you enter shuffle mode? Does it even have one? I had to search on the internet to find it. Once you enter "flash" mode, you have to hit power once more to enter "shuffle" mode, which turns the light green. Then you hit play.
Only, it still plays the same song first. Every single time. After that, then it starts to shuffle. Problem is, shuffle mode isn't even that great. It doesn't keep track of what songs you've already listened to in a session, so there's a chance it'll keep hitting the same songs over and over again. The first time I got shuffle working, I only had 60 songs loaded (more on this in a bit), and it played the same damn song 5 times in 10 minutes. I had to keep skipping it.
So you say "Just add more songs, that'll happen less!". Well, normally I would. In fact I'm trying to do that right now. I'm up to 70 songs now. Want to know why? The device transfers files slower than molasses. Well let's back up a step.
How do you transfer songs to the device? Just plug it into the computer, right? Wrong. You have to power it on. Then plug it in? Still no. You have to enter flash mode. THEN you can plug it in. Any other combination (including combination in the instructions it came with) doesn't work. It's very finnicky.
So once you're plugged in, just copy files over, right? No problem. Except for the fact that it takes bloody forever. I'm getting a transfer rate of 350KB/s. It's going to take over 2 hours to copy over 2GB of music. Using the same USB cable and the same USB port, I can transfer 2GB of music to my phone in less than 5 minutes. There's something wrong with the speed of this device. Whether they used USB 1.1 or just extremely slow memory, I have no idea, but it's S-L-O-W. Very very slow.
I was all set to complain about how 2GB is just a tiny amount of memory for a device these days given that it costs about 4 cents for that much, but after using it, I don't think I'd ever get a chance to use more than 2GB given how long it takes to upload!
So, bottom line. It's a good device if you just want to use Bluetooth. But in that event, you should just go and get the bluetooth-only Boombotix Rex. Don't pay extra for the PRO; because all it offers is a painfully useless USB storage solution that baffles me. I'm so disappointed.
I had an issue with the charging port on my device after I owned it for about two months, contacted Boombotix, and they replaced it immediately. Sent me a new one, not refurbished, with a box (they paid shipping) to return my old defective one back in. Initially took a few days to get a response to my support ticket but, after that my replies were within hours. Great customer service. Recommend and would buy again.
Cons: After 3 uses the unit won't to turn off, instead theres a solid green light at all times. As soon as you unplug it, you have 4 hours to use it before it dies again. Well, that WAS the situation, until it stopped working entirely, bluetooth light on, but unable to connect to any devices or turn off. Now I just have a really cool looking paperweight with a blue light.
I contacted Boombot support about a month ago and haven't heard a single thing back from them. Of course it's now out of warranty and return period so I guess it is what it is - can't win them all.
