Any of you who've ever seen their wonderful versions of the P.D. Wodehouse books will immediately get the joke, in less time than it takes Bertie to down a tumbler of gin. All throughout this undead romp, I heard Fry's and Laurie's voices in my head with every line of dialogue from "Reeves" and "Booster." Of course, you don't have to be familiar with the comedy duo, or even Wodehouse, to enjoy this story, but it does add to the experience significantly.
Modern gadabout Booster can't be bothered to look outside of his FPS xbox games until zombies rise from their graves and his recently-deceased auntie barges in to demand that the wastrel DO something about all of it. Aided by his faithful manservant Reeves (in something along the lines of a 5% Booster to 95% Reeves ratio), Booster sets out into a city teeming with brain-munching corpses, and carnage and hilarity commence, by Jove!
There is satisfyingly bloody zombie-slaughter, eyerolling aplenty from Reeves, and stunningly blithe ignorance aplenty by young Booster. As a fan of the stories Mr Blackford is parodying, I jolly well laughed my bottom off continually. HIGHLY recommended for anyone familiar with Wodehouse, and a great read for anyone who just loves zombies.
Just... just wait until *after* you read Night of the Revenants, okay?
Troy Blackford does a perfect job imitating P.G. Wodehouse's Wooster and Jeeves series in this modern twist on the characters. With Booster and Reeves, Blackford has the dialogue and mannerisms down pat. Only thing missing would be an unwanted arranged engagement for Booster (and to be honest, I thought the story was heading there at one point).
Yes, the characters work perfectly well in the modern day, and yes, they worked so well together that I always pictured Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry (famous for their depictions of the original Wooster and Jeeves) in the parts. The zombies are just different enough to make them more interesting than the usual shamblers, and while events might move a little too quickly for my taste, that's only because I wanted more time with our reluctant heroes.
So what of it, Mr. Blackford? Maybe Booster and Reeves could take on those horribly unmannered vampires next?
Blackford's nod to P.G. Wodehouse is a little morsel everyone should savor. So...download this book, pour yourself the libation of your choosing, settle back in your favorite chair and give this little wonder your full attention. You'll be glad you did.
If this was a nod to Star Trek I would tell Blackford to "live long and prosper." Write more...Many more... Now that I think of it...How about a nod to Star Trek? I would love to see what that zany sense of humor did with the crew of the Enterprise.
A fun, fast read and I hope there will be more adventures with Brodie and Reeves.
