About the Author

ABOUT THE AUTHOR LINDA STYLE is the bestselling, award-winning author of fifteen novels, and the co-author of The Bootcamp for Novelists Basic Training Manual: What you need to know before you write your novel. In addition to her writing, Linda co-founded Bootcamp for Novelists Online, a full-featured writing program, where she taught the advanced techniques module. Her new book, BEYOND THE FIRST DRAFT: Writing Techniques of the Pros, is a compilation of her online courses. With degrees in behavioral science and in journalism, Linda has worked in a number of jobs from director of a state mental health program to magazine editor. This book promises more than it gives. I hoped to find a book that will help me with the second draft, but the level is rather elementary. I'm halfway through the text and all I have found so far is the advice I had already read several times in other books. Nothing new here. Maybe the other half of the book will be more to the purpose - if it is, I will edit this review. But I don't have much hope.

I don't mean that the book is bad - it isn't. If this is your first book on creative writing it will certainly be useful. But if you've already read more than a dozen such books you will not learn much.

For the advanced pro-novelists, the release of this ebook highlights a broad scope of brand new study areas. The work in chapters of study include: lectures, explanations, and samples. It is a fact that I could not wait to open to pages of the new work and am 'excited' at just beginning to absorb this.

I am encouraged to complete my manuscripts with these advanced studies. Fortunately, some review of past lectures is also included in the book for writers new to these workshops.

Be persuaded that this 449 page ebook is beyond beginner perks. Originally, my collection of lectures included the purchase of individualized manuscripts for specific study areas that accommodated the six-month Bootcamp Basic Training Workshops. I've never read a how-to book that went into this much depth about all of the elements and concepts that go into story crafting. Not for the beginning writer, but for the intermediate writer to the seasoned pro, this 400+ page book explains the professional techniques that can take a story from good to great. The author presents and deconstructs terrific examples, as well as presents some self-exercises for creating solid stories by using the exact techniques that have made her own books into awardwinning, bestselling books.

Though I have written novels and short stories, I know that my next books will reap the rewards of the knowledge I have gained from Linda Style's book.

Wow. And I'll repeat it, a great resource! The amount of information in this book is phenomenal!. It's different than most how to write books I've read. Each chapter is a four-part course on a particular advanced writing technique--with detailed explanations and examples...followed up with hands-on exercises. Also, I like that it's written in an easy to read, conversational tone rather than technical when it could easily go that way with all the information and techniques discussed. While the advanced techniques are meant for the more seasoned writer, I think it's also great for newer writers like me because there's a quick refresher on the basic structure needed for each technique to be effective. This book has the most detailed explanation of what's needed to draw the reader in and keep him reading that I've come across...and each chapter opened my eyes even more. The book has completely changed my thinking process on writing and I'm grateful to the author for giving me a different perspective. There's also a bonus section on query and synopsis that's worth the price alone. I highly recommend this book for any writer wanting to improve their writing skills.

But most of all, the chapters on synopsis, cover sheets and submitting to editors and agents is this book's gold. I have half a dozen books with so much convoluted information on synopsis and submitting that only left me in over-whelm. Thank you, Linda for writing a book that I can really use!!!
