That said, as I was reviewing the recipes with my significant other, I started getting ideas for how we could formulate our own boozy milkshakes, and make them work for our tastes.
If you buy this book, skip all the silliness about making your own ice cream - buy it at the store, for heaven's sake. While you're at it, skip out on most of the handmade sauces and compotes, and just use Torani(tm) or some similar brand of flavored syrup for stuff like lime, ginger, raspberry, strawberry, and whatnot. Instead of searching the ends of the earth for exotic flavored ice creams (like ginger), just add the flavored syrup to vanilla ice cream. For some of the fruity flavors, you might be better off using sorbet, instead.
Try it. I do appreciate the author's offering these inspirations, but don't feel obliged to follow them to the letter. Make boozy milkshakes with stuff you already have, if at all possible.
There are basic recipes including vanilla ice cream, strawberry sorbet, and a variety of sauces you'll need to make the shakes. The Whiskey Butterscotch sauce is a standout for me.
Every recipe is beautifully photographed, the measurements are in both imperial and metric. I've had a lot of fun with this in just a week. There aren't a lot of recipes but they all provide a great framework to use a a jumping point for making your own creations.
I think it's a good value for the price, the recipes have all come out the way they were supposed to and the instructions are well written and easy to follow. This would be a the perfect add on gift if you are buying someone a blender for a shower or house warming gift.
