Nita hopes Craig is in God’s plan for her, but there’s nothing they can do until she’s through probation. She sees him occasionally when he’s assigned to her region, and she tries hard to avoid his magnetic pull.
Once she’s a full-fledged agent, to her surprise they’re assigned on a project together. They patrol a suspected entryway from the Mexican border for illegals. When one of them is caught, Nita notices a peculiar accent which opens up a more dangerous assignment for the two agents. Nita’s pesky neighbor, Bonnie, asks too many questions until Nita and Craig wonder if she’s also part of the problem.
Nita’s faith keeps her strong and when her life is in danger, Craig calls out to the God he’s forgotten.
Ms. Wootson brings a well written suspense novel with an unusual subject. The sights, scenes, and sounds of Mexico and the border area crossing are brought to life with her well defined prose
He pushes the trainees harder and harder, knowing what awaits them in the field. One trainee catches his interest, Nita. She has courage and something else he can’t put his finger on. He’s attracted to her but knows he can’t act on his feelings.
Nita graduates and finds herself assigned to work on a special assignment with Agent Craig, the man who’s occupied her thoughts non-stop. Now they’re partners out in the field and neither of them can deny their feelings for each other. Can they work together without letting their relationship get in the way or will their love put their lives in jeopardy?
This is my first book by Alice Wootson and I loved it. She gives such detail about the border agent lifestyle, training and covert operations that I felt a part of the border patrol. The romance that blossoms between Craig and Nita is gradual yet real. The plot moved quickly and I loved the fact that I didn’t know who the bad guys were but still got a glimpse into their plan. Told in multiple POV’s yet the transitions were seamless.
If you like romantic suspense like me, you will love Border Danger. The suspense was kicked up a few notches, front and center, while the romance was in the background. I can’t wait to read Alice’s next book.
Favorite Character: Nita. I really liked her as a character because she’s a tough woman whose faith is just as fierce as her determination to be a border agent. No matter the obstacle, she finds the strength within to overcome. As a reader, I loved the inner dialogue in Nita’s mind. She’s instantly attracted to Agent Craig Sawyer and she’s not sure why. He’s her drill sergeant in agent training and pushes her hard. The more she’s around him, the more she prays to God for guidance. A well-rounded character and I was rooting for her throughout the whole book.
“She looked deeper into his eyes and got lost. She saw promise but also regret. Nita knew her eyes held the same. Still, somewhere deep within her was a desperate wish for the regret to go away to make room for hope. She stood in place as if waiting for somebody to show her the solution. Lord, help me.”
My Rating: 5 stars
The story had potential, but I had a difficult time connecting with the characters and finding myself engaged with what I was reading. I was intrigued by the premise, being a Texan myself. I wanted to see how Wootson would portray the characters from here and try to bring the setting to life. When she took the story over the border to Mexico, I saw a more defined setting and character development than throughout the rest of the book. Part of the problem with not being able to relate to the characters was the way she flip-flopped viewpoints. Not only was this done with in the same chapters but a lot of times it was also done on the same page. I found myself having to go back and reread just to figure out who was doing the talking, or narrating. To me it is really frustrating when this occurs, it takes me out of the story and I have a hard time getting back. The moles within the agency were a nice touch but was also misleading at times with two separate agendas ongoing.
The story had suspense at times and a romantic factor that didn’t interfere with the rest of the story, which I liked. There was also not much fluff to bring the story down. While the story was good I don’t foresee myself reading it again.
The heroine is strong and determined and cool-headed, the hero is a good and honest man fighting criminals and his own issues. Together they make a powerful team working to keep order on the US-Mexico border.
Although the perspective changes could be a bit abrupt, I didn't really find that they confused the story line, or detracted from the rising tension and developing romance.
