Review

Praise for Border Town #1: Crossing the Line

“Packed with action and surprising twists and turns up to the very last page, this start to the new Border Town series is a gripping mystery and also a warm, contemporary Latino drama of extended family and friends… With lots of laughs, especially about small town lack of privacy and about extended family, the drama is both suspenseful and touching.” --Booklist

“A fast-paced, easy-to-read book that Latino teenagers will enjoy to read – mostly because they will see themselves in the pages.” – The Hispanic Reader

By Melissa Sack VINE VOICE on March 12, 2013
Format: Mass Market Paperback
This book is the first in the series called Border Town. It is about a latin america family living in a Texas town near the Mexico border. Fabiola is excited to have her younger sister Alexis at her school. She is hoping to show her the ropes. Alexis wants to live her own life and does not want to live in her sisters shadow. She gets caught up with some of the wrong crowd.

The book is very short and moves at a fast pace. Recommended for teens that enjoy realistic fiction.

Although I'm no literary critic, I found this book to be a well written effort by Malin Alegria. The character development is great, as is the story line. In addition I think that this book will be a great read for any adolescent girl who finds herself in the awkward situations of adolescence, especially those who have a younger sister. The extended family subplot issues add a complexity and depth, as well. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Having actually been a young girl, I could relate to a lot of what Fabiola went through. I love the colorful characters that are her family and friends. Makes me want to go to Texas!

There is a saying in the Southwest that "The border is its own country." The first title in Malin Alegria's new BorderTown series, "Crossing the LIne," blends a generous serving of Texas-Mexico border culture with some universal concerns of teenaged girls (big sister - little sister, boyfriends, family, crazy cousins). Fabi Garza wants to make sure that sister Alexis gets off to a good start in high school, but Alexis has her own ideas - and they include Dex Andrews, the biggest creep in the school! All the girls in my class simply adored this book and can't wait for the second one!
