That said, it is a great little expansion into what is already one of the most content heavy FPS exploratory shooter with random loot generated similar to Diablo and the like.
If you liked Borderlands 1 + 2 then this should be right about your speed. Recommend purchasing this for the meantime.
A large difference of note is the addition of an "atmosphere" in the world you explore. What this means is that in certain outdoor (and some indoor) areas you have an O2 meter that needs to be watched and continually refilled. It is'nt all that difficult to do since usually there are 'O2 recharge' spots scattered around the world, and usually killing enemies gives you a pretty good chance to get a small refill per kill. It usually isn't anything that is frustrating unless you get on a roll of head shot after headshot to then realize you are starting to run low.
How this new game mechanic translates into tons-of-fun is the ability while in an O2 deprived area to jump much higher than usual, and then hit your crouch button in order to slam down the ground below you dealing a nice amount of area of effect damage and pretty much killing what ever might be below you at the time. This really helps the flow of the game as I tend to get into a rhythm of jump-slamming around in order to build momentum and 'fly' all over the place. Loads of fun!
Flaws:
- Humor/Writing is not as good as BL2.
- Pacing suffers more than BL2.
- Dialogue will easily be overwritten by walking away or doing something, so you easily lose half the things that are being said. In BL2 when you walked away, the game would switch the sound from proximity to directly over ECHO if you walked too far away. Not in this game!
- DLC dialogue sounds decide-ly penciled in (cue Aurelia's interactions at any point for an example here)
Pro:
- There is new content by playing through a second time in True Vault Hunter mode. Athena narrates the story to Tiny Tina and Brick in TVHM, instead of Lilith. So there's some scraps of fresh content.
- the DLC characters have some REALLY rewarding skill trees. I enjoy playing the baroness and wish i could bring her over to BL2 and play here there.
All in all, this is a good game but the replayability of it suffers from the lack of a strong story line and characters you really care about. Maybe that will change with the DLC. I hope so.
Overall ranking: It's fun but falls short of expectations somewhat.
The maps are not as diverse though makes the game kinda dull in that way.
(hay look a moon setting... and another one... oh look more rocks with that blue tint...OMG LAVA wow -_-... what !? we're in a space station?... finally..... something new)
^^^^^ Just saying compared to the other two the settings in pre sequel are really dull and bland well not really dull just the same EVERYWHERE, but that was their choice when they said hay lets have are next game on the moon.
All in all the humor is still there so if you are religious about this game then yeah its worth playing but honestly im waiting for the DLC to see how I really like it because right now its meh.
additionally, i thought the character line-up was better in the second (obviously this is debatable and based on individual preferences). i also question the price, however i dont know what all went into the game. it just seems a bit much for it.
all that said, ive been playing regularly since it came out. its fun. its what you would expect. it just feels a bit familiar.
if youre a fan of the series, id suggest it...after a price drop.
The Playable classes have really interesting skill trees and the now have speaking parts during NPC quest giving. The game still has quite a bit of comedy and plot twists (on side quests).
There are bosses you can fight, restart the game and fight again, but loot drops don't change :-(. Just use the grinding machine to upgrade the loot :-).
I've played borderlands since it first came out, and this version is really fun to play, and will replay it when I beat the first play through. Others might have weird negative things to say about this game, but I feel that this version is way better that Borderlands 2. I cant wait for more DLCs like BL1 and BL2 had.
