I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I'm glad Showtime said no to this 2-hour conclusion. It's strange to end a show that was supposed to run for four seasons with a movie in the first place. I'm sure Neil Jordan was thrown off by Showtime's announcement that season 3 would be it, and maybe he was desperate to have any ending. I mean absolutely no disrespect towards Neil Jordan with this review. I blame SHOWTIME entirely for this.
SPOILERS***
LUCREZIA: I felt Lucrezia was out of character, there is no way she would just turn her back on Cesare, and fear him lol it's not like she just found out he was a murderer. She has worshiped him as her protector and guide her entire life. He had been more of a father figure to her than Rodrigo had ever been. She knew he killed for her, once for revenge and once for her and her child's own protection (killing his own brother for her). She knows he only cares about her happiness no matter what and would never hurt her. She wasn't happy with Alfonso, not in the least. So a lot of her comments pertaining to him were out of character and wasn't cohesive with the storyline. Also, didn't she have a kid with Alfonso who many suspected of being Cesare's? AND Why would Lucrezia all of a sudden "plot" with Della Rovere against her own father and beloved brother? When was Della Rovere ever a good man?
I'm sorry, but I'm not buying it. Lucrezia does not have multiple personality disorder, and this character that was written is almost unrecognizable.
The incestual Pandora's Box is already open, just run with it. This whole back and forth thing, especially when both have been desiring it for so long to just fizzle away isn't staying true to the characters or the story.
CESARE: What's up with all the gayish scenes between Cesare and Micheletto? Again, out of character. Any word that is going to be on Cesare's last breath would be Lucrezia. Everyone knows that. And for him to wait until half-way through the script to inquire about Lucrezia's whereabouts was odd. Plus, for him to involve his father to help clean up the Alfonso mess is not Cesare's style. I really can't see him slicing off Caterina's lips, harming a woman that way, even her. Cesare is a strong character all on his own, sure Micheletto was invaluable to him, but he can manage on his own just fine, he is smart.
MICHELETTO: Why would Micheletto come only when summoned by Rodrigo? He doesn't follow the rules. Micheletto would have killed Pascal even without Cesare's orders, that's just who he is, not pout and blame him.
PLOT: Everyone's reaction to Cesare poisoning the whole town doesn't really fit either. The former king had people stuffed and sewn for a morbid "The Last Supper". The French army that had invaded in season 2 sliced off nun's ears and wore them as necklaces. I don't think a bunch of people poisoned would shock anyone. I'm sure it was due to time restraints that Neil Jordan was forced to face.
Why wouldn't we get to see Cesare become the successful ruler of many city-states? At least for a while, anyway. IMO, the whole 3 seasons were leading up to Cesare's success. He finally gets there, only to fail right away, knowing no happiness with his triumphs and his sister who he adores? That doesn't make sense, he actually had a few good years at the top and many of the people liked him. Why wouldn't we see that?
Wouldn't we see more of Rodrigo's arrangements for the papacy to be handed down to his son? Plotting with Cardinal Sforza and Machiavelli perhaps? Trying to please the people so they'd accept it more when the time came?
Wouldn't we see the plotting of the cardinals against Rodrigo? See them switch sides once Della Rovere came back?
Why wouldn't we see the fascinating Leonardo da Vinci work for Cesare?
Why wouldn't we see Lucrezia become the poisoner she is notoriously known to be?
Anyway, I could go on and on, but I won't. I know this is a skeleton of a script, and it seemed a little rushed. If only Neil Jordan was respected enough to have been allowed to finish his story properly. It was set to run for four seasons and that's what it needs to be. VERY poor decision on the part of the execs. They could have had a built-in fan base for The Vatican if only they had respected the writer, cast and crew AND the viewers. Now there's only one way The Borgias fans will tune into Showtime and that is if the execs get some integrity and do the right thing!
Unfortunately, this was not satisfying to me, and I want a fourth and final FULL season to conclude the story of the Borgia family. This 2-hour script does not do the wonderful saga justice.
David Nevins/Showtime RUINED EVERYTHING and needs to fix it. This shouldn't be all about MONEY MONEY MONEY, it should be about having a quality piece of work and giving the subscribers what we PAY for!!!!!
