The pouring, as noted by other reviewers, can be accomplished by holding your glass directly under the pitcher. The spout on this pitcher is misleading; it doesn't actually do anything because the lip of the pitcher does not open into the mouth. When you pour from this pitcher, it's exactly like pouring from a cup or other container with a lipped top. This is not a design flaw. It is necessary for the lip to go all the way around the pitcher because if it opened up into the mouth for easy pouring, the gasket could not form a seal. It's a tradeoff, so if you want a pitcher that is easy to pour, get one that doesn't have a gasketed lid.
The lid itself is built of two parts: an inner element, which acts like a very wide screw that screws into an outer element, which is like a threaded hole designed to accept the middle screw. The gasket is securely fastened to the bottom of the middle section, so it moves up and down as you turn the middle section. The middle section is also equipped with an oversized handle that performs two functions. One, it prevents you from overtightening or dismantling the lid by catching on raised arrows on the outer element's surface, and two, it of course makes it easier to turn the middle section. The outer section is what does the work. As you turn the middle section toward the closed position, you're basically unscrewing the screw, causing it to move upward. The outer section, though, has little triangles that turn the thing into a sort of funnel that is narrow at the bottom and wide at the top. As you screw the middle section toward the closed position, the gasket is forced up and over these triangles, stretching it forcibly. The stretching pushes the gasket up against the sides of the pitcher. When the handle is turned all the way to the close position, the gasket is fully stretched and the best seal is made. You can see how all this happens very easily by removing the gasket and opening/closing the handle.
I'm posting two pictures of the lid in the item photos section. View those for reference if you don't own the pitcher yet and want to see what I mean.
I ordered 6 of these and so made the shipping problem described in another review not applicable. The vendor does charge a lot for shipping and handling, but if you order multiple items, it works out great, because most of the shipping is probably handling---in other words, if you ordered 6 pitchers, the shipping and handling is only $9.99! Also the pitchers are very sturdy and heavy, which I wanted.
These pitchers fit beautifully on the inside door of my refrigerator. They don't leach chemicals into my beverages, either. They take up very little space (they are squared not rounded so they fit well all lined up) and are attractive. If you are looking for a healthy option to plastic, this is it. They also have a nice snug lid to keep things fresh. The lid can be turned to an "open" position like many pitchers so that the lid doesn't have to be removed to pour.
The pitchers are attractive and not chinsy-looking like plastic pitchers. Buy more than one not only to save on shipping and handling, but because you'll want more for sure!
I was very disappointed because it had been exactly what I needed, the right shape to fit efficiently into my fridge and still hold as much as I needed it to, perfect size, airtight lid, a handle shaped well for my hand. I know a lot of people don't like the handle, but I did. The glass felt substantial enough when it first arrived that I thought it would be durable. So much for that. I had had such good experiences with Bormioli Rocco products before - Fido jars, Quattro Stagioni jars/bottles, swing-top bottles (all insanely cheaper at a local kitchenware store, so I had plenty of 'em) - that I was honestly stunned.
It was well outside the return period since my use of it had been delayed for reasons not worth discussing, would have cost almost as much to ship it back as I had paid for it, and I had no way to prove I hadn't caused the breakage, so after examining the Amazon return policies I just tossed it into the recycle bin.
