but if I had realized how simple of a device this is, I would have just put the bottles in a bowl of water, covered it, and put it in the microwave! It would have been a lot cheaper!!! It literally is just a bowl with a cover, and a fancy bottle holding device. Nothing elaborate!

If you use the born free bottles exclusively or primarily, I would highly recommend this sterilizer. I had an avent one, which works for the smaller bottles and misc parts from testing which bottle the baby liked, but when she settled to born free, the larger bottles don't really fit other sterilizers well. Definitely worth spending the money to have the same brand's sterilizer... and it does four (4) bottles and parts at a time! i also use glass, this works fine with the glass bottles.

I loved this the first time I used it for my now 3 yo daughter. It is roomy (sterilized avent breast pump accessories, yoomi bottles and sippy cups and straws). The fact that it only sterilizes 4 bottles at a time doesn't bother me as it's done in 4-5 min. I also pack in a lot of accessories along with 4 bottles so that placates any reservation I might have otherwise. I simply reload if there are others to be sterilized and the product itself doesn't become "another" dirty dish to wash (as with pots) if rinsed and set out to dry after use.
That all aside, can anyone remind me how much water to put in? I misplaced my manual and can't find instructions anywhere online. I know to microwave 4-5 min. I may just have to gauge it as to what I remember the levels to be when I used it in 2011. However, any help on exact amt of water is greatly appreciated.

I use Born Free bottles exclusively, so I can't say much about other brands fitting or not fitting. I'm more interested in how well a BORN FREE sterilizer works with BORN FREE bottles. This works great and has for both of my daughters (ages 5 years and 7 months). I like how user-friendly it is. Even after five years, I was able to take it out, wash it and use it as though I'd been using it all along. It's also easy to clean, no small nooks or crannies to scrub. I usually just clean it by hand since my dishwasher is always full. Each piece of the Born Free Bottles has a place and they all come out steaming hot.
Side note: If you don't wash the bottle parts completely (which can happen when tired new moms try washing a million things!) they come out a little smelly. The sterilizer doesn't actually clean the milk out of the bottles. Duh, right? I know, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case this happens to others. It's not the sterilizer's fault if the bottles smell.
The only thing I'd change is the lid. It doesn't latch. This doesn't interfere with function, but having a lid that doesn't budge while I'm trying to move it with one hand would be nice.

I saw a negative review about this sterilizer and Medela bottles. First of all, you can't fault Born Free products for not working with other brands. They were designed to accommodate their own bottles. That being said, I have used this sterilizer with my Medela bottles and all the pumping accessories (except the tubes, of course). There are four holes around the center peg. I usually place the valves (with membranes attached) over these holes. The bottles do tilt a little since they have narrow openings, but they remain upright enough for steam to enter the bottles.

I had to order a replacement sterilizer because my husband accidentally melted the cover on our stove. While I was waiting for the new sterilizer to arrive I sterilized the bottles by washing them, putting them in a large metal mixing bowl, then pouring filtered boiling water into the bowl so that all of the bottles and parts were covered. This method seemed to work well. Once the replacement sterilizer arrived, I kind of felt that it was a waste of money. I still have it and use it, but it's really not a necessity.

So this item works, does the job, etc, but it's large and hard to store. You could make your own steamer at home to do the same job with just a bowl and a lid that you have laying around your kitchen. Unless you want your bottles piling up in the sink or sitting around your house, you have to have this out on your counter holding the bottles and it takes a lot of room. It also only holds four bottles, so I have to use it twice a day and it barely fits in a smaller microwave. If you are dead set on getting this then knock yourself out. It does what it is suppose to, but if you don't want to deal with a space issue and have a microwave safe bowl at home, just use that instead.

The product works great - it's SOOO much faster than boiling an entire pot of water (just takes a couple minutes in the microwave)! I didn't give it 5 stars only because it's not quite as nifty as the Avent one with it's "dome rack" in the center. But it does what it's supposed to do.

I didn't get one of these before I had my baby. However, when breastfeeding didn't work out and I was exclusively bottle-feeding, we were constantly boiling water to sterilize the bottles. We knew we had to get something that would make things easier--and take less time! This is a lifesaver!
