Lady Sara's Book Blog Review
There are other dystopian novels out there and I have found that there is quite a bit that can be done with a post-apocalyptic world. However, author David Wind has come up with one of the most intriguing and original story lines for a book that I have come across in a long time. Part science fiction, part fantasy and part horror, 'Born To Magic' is a futuristic fantasy where the world of Nevaeh jumps off from the first page. The author writes beautifully, using specific vocabulary, without holding back the story line. I thought Areenna, the young heroine, was a well-developed character and fully understanding of the consequences of her actions. I couldn't put it down and read it from beginning to end in one sitting! I stayed up until three in the morning to finish it ;p Excellent writing from an excellent author.
"Uniquely intriguing blend of Shannara and Star Wars perhaps?" Sheila Deeth VINE VOICE
Born to Magic presents a very different world from our own, where magic has a logic given to women, and a pre-industrial America has well-defined rules and laws governing kingdoms, kings and queens. But it wasn't always so. These kingdoms warred incessantly before the new leader arrived and changed everything. Of course, the reader asks what happened before that - how did America become a land of kingdoms? And for this, the author presents intriguing hints that provide enough information without ever giving too much.
Author David Wind presents a fascinating future history very naturally in this tale, blending magic and science with touches of sociology and present day danger. He pulls the reader in with well-timed mystery and revelation, amuses with nicely futuristic words and idioms, and adds a fascinating dual sense of dangers past and present.
As the first book in the series, Born to Magic introduces an captivating culture, peopled with enjoyable characters. The magical Areena and the man she might learn to love make convincing protagonists that readers easily learn to care about. Hints of Star Wars blend with Shannara perhaps, and the result is nicely individual, futuristic, fascinating, and very well-told. Highly recommended.
Join me and see what it means to be Born to Magic!   Review by : Otherworldly Book Adventure
Born to magic is a marvelous adventure. I felt like I was allowed to experience it all right along with the characters. David Wind has a way of bringing the story to life through his words. He writes with such great detail and passion. I love how he even changed up names, because as we know language is ever evolving. I would have to laugh sometimes when they would talk about a dangerous snuck or killing a rabt though.
It was a long read, but well worth it all. I found this book to be full of surprises. It has a great otherworldly feel about it. At times I would feel as if two worlds were coming together. It is a futuristic world set in medieval times. I just love the characters and I find them easy to relate to. In Born to Magic it talks about how a man and woman thinks and reacts differently. I think it is great how they could balance out each other in this and at times also learn to see things in a different way. Oh and the end was a great place to stop. It made me feel as if the story had some resolve, but also showed how the adventure was just beginning.
3,000 years from now the world has changed. War almost wiped humanity, but some survived. They were changed by the radiation that was set upon the world, some more than others. Races no longer exist. The men became bigger and stronger and the women developed magic. They seem to complement each other well. However, all is not well in this new world. There is an unimaginable evil that is determined to control them all. Humanity is not ready to go down without a fight. Areenna and Mikaal must find a way to overcome the evil that is headed their way and with the help from some unexpected places, they just might stand a chance. They must embark on a journey through some of the worst lands with danger around every corner. With a little something extra from the past will the world survive? Will Areenna and Mikaal find what they seek?

Born To Magic, Tales of Nevaeh (Vol.1) by David Wind
Author Lisa Verge Higgins, [Goodreads]
A dystopic fantasy with a feminist twist! In the new world that develops long after the old one was destroyed, women have the upper hand. They wield the magic while the men wield swords. But a strong, dark power is rising from the old world, determined to destroy the cooperation and ties that the kingdoms have painstakingly developed for mutual protection. It falls to two young people to ward off the threat--Areenna, a woman-child with great potential powers, and the young prince Mikaal, who has a terrible secret of his own.
David Wind has penned a classic fantasy quest and a fabulous first installment in what promises to be an epic series.

A very original story, very detailed and well written. Each character has their own qualities, some are likable while others are not. There is suspense, adventure and magic. All the qualities of a great fantasy.

Born To Magic is a Semi-Finalist for Best Fantasy 2015: The Kindle Book Awards 2015
This book is the first in a series I started because of how the world seems to be evolving. I decided to use a combo of sci-fi & fantasy to show a possible future that grew from today's world-wide turmoil caused by terrorism and fundamentalist thinking, There have been many science fiction and fantasy writers over the past century and a half who have shown us a myriad of possibilities for our future, mostly Dark Sci-Fi or Dark Fantasy.
Born To Magic: Tales Of Nevaeh, Volume I is one of those possibilities, which I present in an epic sword and sorcery tableau, using a mixture of Science Fiction and Fantasy to create a Dystopian World that is different from any other.
This novel and series was written for readers from (ya) sixteen to seniors.  It is for anyone who wonders what the future holds.

This book has astounded me. For one, this genre is not my cup of tea. Although I love science fiction, I’m not a big fan of fantastical worlds, especially when a medieval type of life is involved. Yet, this book has been a delightful surprise for me.

Other than enjoying the enchanting story of Princess Areenna and Prince Mikaal who set out on a treacherous journey to save their magical world, I was also greatly amazed by the concept of the storyline. David Wind has set this world into the very far future of the USA, at a time when worldwide terrorism has used technology to pollute the world with radiation, ending civilization as we know it.

In his fantastical world, the author introduces an array of mutated animals that all appear intriguing as well as surprisingly endearing, so much that they made me wish they existed in the real world; treygones and kraals in particular. There are beautiful descriptions of forestland, rivers and medieval-type castles and keeps and in this world, the women are revered and have magical powers. When the dark forces who have destroyed the world as we know it today return to try and rule even this new, devastated world, the gifted Areenna is summoned to travel with Prince Mikaal to The Island as to come face to face with the bare truth about the destruction that was brought upon it. On their way there, they get to know each other better as friends, they gather new gifts from other realms and of course, they get to master their newly acquired abilities that will help them in their final battle against Evil.

Born to Magic by David Wind 5/5 stars
In the aftermath of worldwide terrorism, a new world is born: Nevaeh! It’s where medieval/magical kingdoms exist in consensus under the rule of High King Roth and his wife Enaid; and only women are gifted with natural psychic ability, while Men focus on learning the physical arts of combat. However, the Dark Ones have already infiltrated the kingdoms with spies, and are rallying their forces for another war. Areenna, gifted with the most powerful psychic abilities, is Nevaeh’s best hope.
Born to Magic is an unusual epic fantasy adventure. The premise and overarching message was the hideous and very real threat of annihilation by a former enemy. It’s unusual because the minor message of the story is that whatever has happened in the past, society must be open-minded to change; and is ironic because it introduces a new world within a new world? This introduction is brought about when Areenna is destined to be joined by Mikaal, son of High King Roth, on an adventure. Both are told of their importance to one another and must go on a journey of discovery to realise their full potential. On their adventure they clash not just with dark forces, but also the status quo of Nevaeh. Their coming will bring about a change that must occur for the sake of human survival.
Once I read the lines ‘He is not Olrac!’ I knew I was in for something profound. The first half of the book was bursting with anticipation, where dangers lurked everywhere, and was imbued with some kind of writing sixth-sense, where the reader knows something perilous is going to happen. It’s exactly this kind of writing that attaches me to this author’s work. Once the second half of the story commenced, I could not stop reading!

This was the first book of David Wind's that I've read, but from the very first paragraph I knew he's an accomplished story-teller. I devoured the book in a few hours, unable to put it down. A unique mix of fantasy and science fiction, Born to Magic follows the adventures of a gifted caster and the only man to possess magical abilities in a post-apocalyptic Earth, destroyed 3,000 years ago by terrorists.

The action was flawless, as was the writing and pacing. And yet, what I most enjoyed was the philosophy behind the story. I usually prefer a less maniheistic look of the world in my books (more grey than black and white), but Wind offers fascinating insight in the male and female psyche. The Island scenes were particularly haunting and I find myself thinking back to them every now and then.

I can hardly wait for the next book in the series!

I received an ARC copy by the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Terrific – I’ve found an Author who is intelligent, confident in his prose, and tells a great story!
I like the concept of Nevaeh, and women will find this is more gender affirmative than so many novels written by men. I expect it will be enjoyed by many who don’t usually choose to read books in the science-fiction/fantasy genre. Not only is it an entertaining story, but there’s a depth in the underlying philosophy that adds to the appeal.
This is the first David Wind novel I’ve read – the first of many, I hope. I’ll certainly be reading the follow-ups to this one.
