BORN WILD is the fifth instalment in Julie Ann Walker’s adult, contemporary, romantic Black Knights Inc action/suspense series focusing on a group of ex Navy SEALs, Special Ops, FBI agents and military soldiers who are now working together as a covert government defense team. This is Billy Richert and Eve Edens’s story-Billy is Becky’s (Boss Knight’s wife) brother and Eve is Becky’s BFF. Growing up surrounded by wealth Eve was always one to follow orders but in the past twelve years, Eve’s life has changed dramatically. Following a series of attempts on her life, Eve’s only choice is to contact the man from who she walker away twelve years earlier.
The focus of the story is on the building relationship between Eve and Billy- a second chance at love story but one that is hindered by several attempts against Eve’s life. When the Black Knights Inc is called into action they will find themselves facing a series of inept investigations that place Eve’s life on the line-time and time again. When the final confrontation finds Eve and Billy facing a life and death situation, the reality of the situation will force Eve to make a decision that will end with a shootout and the possibility of two men dead.
The secondary characters include a few of the BKI operatives including Ace, Mac and the woman to whom he has lost his heart-Delilah. The world building continues with the familiarity of the BKI team as well as the history behind each of our leading heroes throughout the series. The action and suspense will keep the reader immersed in a storyline where heartbreak and betrayal are revealed over and over again.
I have to say I didn't have high hopes for this book because I wasn't a big fan of Eve and Billy in the previous books. Eve has always been a shy girl who was pretty much a doormat. She has been trying very hard in the past few years to stand up for herself and "not take orders" from other people especially her very wealthy father. Eve ends up being a surprisingly strong character in this book. When it really comes down to it she steps up and handles the situation and doesn't let everyone tell her what to do. There is a bit of falling apart and crying but it's understandable with everything that Eve goes through in this book. The one thing that drove me crazy about Eve was her ridiculous vocabulary. She used the phrase lady-balls way too often, and quite frankly once was too much. When she said the phrase "Cheese and Rice to Billy during their first sex scene I didn't know whether to laugh or roll my eyes. Honestly, I get she was sweet but no one actually talks like that.
Billy is a former Navy Seal and a tough guy. Mostly I liked him but at some point I completely agreed with Ace when he said ""What you need is an old-fashioned ass-whooping....Because your ticket on the Poor-Me-I-Got-Dumped train has long expired. You need to hop off at the next stop, my friend. It's at the intersection of SuckItUp and GetTheHellOverIt." I mean how long do you hold a decision Eve made at 18 years old over 12 years ago against her.
The romance was slow to build but there was a lot of sexual tension during the story and when they finally gave in they really went for it (I think it was two chapters of nothing but sex).
Overall, I didn't roll my eyes near as much in this book as I have the past couple of books. The plot seemed more realistic and the villain wasn't immediately obvious. For the most part I enjoyed both Eve and Billy. I also really liked Mac and Ace (the other two Black Knights who are in this book) and Delilah who will obviously be Mac's love interest. I was pretty close to giving up on this series before this book but I enjoyed it enough that I'll pick up Mac and Delilah's book next.
Overall, this is a fast paced, suspenseful and action packed romance and worth reading.
They meet up 12 yrs later and Billy still has old hurts toward Eve but she just wants Billy back.
Then Eve runs into a bit of trouble someone is trying to kill her and the police won't believe her so she goes to Billy for help.
Billy agrees to help her but can't forgive.
Read how the story unfolds and how hopefully through someone else sabotaging their youth they can find their way back.
This was a good story but Billy really held on to his hurt for a long time guess we all do until the truth is revealed.
