Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When the Chicago police dismiss her claim that somebody is trying to kill her, socialite Eve Edens turns to the Black Knights Inc. for help, even though this means she will have to see ex-Navy SEAL Billy Reichart again. They still love each other intensely. But he cannot forgive her for marrying someone else while he was in SEAL training, and she feels hopelessly guilty, even though the marriage is long over. As Billy protects her while they figure out who is after her, they work through their tormented past. A side plot involves another Knight, Bryan Mac Macmillan, a former FBI agent, who is desperatelyfighting his attraction to Delilah, a curvy redheaded biker-bar owner and former CPA. No doubt they’re the stars of a future book. Possibly the best of Walker’s Black Knight tales, Born Wild is filled with highly sensual sex scenes and enough tension to ignite the pages. Fans of Maya Banks’ KGI series will also love this, as will almost any military romance reader who likes ripped alpha males, among whom Billy Reichart can certainly be counted. --Mary K. Chelton

Initially I loved this series. But with each new book the author has increased her use of character internal monologues. The character will speak a couple of lines and then for 2 pages we "hear" their thoughts. It's annoying! Stop it!!! And what makes it worse is that it's like listening to a bunch of teenagers. Example: "Woo-hoo! Ladyballs in the ha-yowse!" or my favorite, "Sh*t on a stick!" But it doesn't stop there; it continues for several more paragraphs. I found myself skipping over all that just to get to the actual dialogue. If you cut out all the "filler" the book would have been 1/3 the length.
Eve is a "well-respected and renowned marine biologist" from Chicago. So why, why, why does she speak like her IQ is 40? See the aforementioned "Ladyballs" comment, her repeated use of the expressions "dangit" and my personal favorite "Uh, can you say holy schnikes?" REALLY??!! The author needs a good editor to stop this nonsense.

My Review:
Loved this story! Billy and Eve have a history that makes it extremely painful for either of them to be around the other. Twelve years ago, something happened that destroyed their relationship and ended with Eve getting married to the "wrong" guy. At the time, Eve was a pushover. Since then, she likes to think that she's gotten stronger. She doesn't want to be that shy, retiring girl that everyone can push around any more. That's why it's doubly infuriating that no one takes her seriously when she tells the police that someone is trying to kill her. As a last resort, she goes to Wild Bill for help.

Billy doesn't want to be anywhere near Eve. It still hurts to be near her after she unceremoniously dumped him and married someone else at 18. But the evidence proves that she's right and he can't stand by and watch her get targeted so he steps up.

Well, you know when two people have this much of a hard time simply being around each other after so long that they are definitely going to combust when they get together. The book did not disappoint in that regard. I liked both of these two characters a lot, but I loved Eve and how she has taken charge of her life. She's a sweet shy character on the surface, but the girl is tough when she has to be. I loved how she constantly surprised all the guys in the story with how strong she could really be. It definitely made her a heroine that I could love.

Another thing I also really loved about this story was Ace and Mac. They are another two members of BKI. Mac is definitely going to be paired up with Delilah....there were some serious fireworks between them in this book. Then Ace is gay. I'm really hoping that we get our first m/m in this series with his character.

I've read a couple other of Walker's books and enjoyed them well enough; however, this book was tedious. It felt like the author was trying so hard to create tough and edgy internal dialogues inside the H & h's heads that she was stuffing extra verbiage in it to make the book last longer. About halfway through, once the H or h began beating the same dead horse, I began skimming. It's pretty bad when you are shouting "Shut up and advance the plot!" at your Kindle, desperately hoping that the lead characters will hear you and **do** something. However, it didn't work.
Not her best.

4.25 stars

BORN WILD is the fifth instalment in Julie Ann Walker’s adult, contemporary, romantic Black Knights Inc action/suspense series focusing on a group of ex Navy SEALs, Special Ops, FBI agents and military soldiers who are now working together as a covert government defense team. This is Billy Richert and Eve Edens’s story-Billy is Becky’s (Boss Knight’s wife) brother and Eve is Becky’s BFF. Growing up surrounded by wealth Eve was always one to follow orders but in the past twelve years, Eve’s life has changed dramatically. Following a series of attempts on her life, Eve’s only choice is to contact the man from who she walker away twelve years earlier.

The focus of the story is on the building relationship between Eve and Billy- a second chance at love story but one that is hindered by several attempts against Eve’s life. When the Black Knights Inc is called into action they will find themselves facing a series of inept investigations that place Eve’s life on the line-time and time again. When the final confrontation finds Eve and Billy facing a life and death situation, the reality of the situation will force Eve to make a decision that will end with a shootout and the possibility of two men dead.

The secondary characters include a few of the BKI operatives including Ace, Mac and the woman to whom he has lost his heart-Delilah. The world building continues with the familiarity of the BKI team as well as the history behind each of our leading heroes throughout the series. The action and suspense will keep the reader immersed in a storyline where heartbreak and betrayal are revealed over and over again.

I really loved the series when it first started but now I believe it has dragged on too long. The two main characters were nauseating and irritating and I was not rooting for them at all. I totally recommend her earlier books, however the last two have been extremely disappointing. I'm done with this series...save your money and don't buy this book.
