Wow, what a difference vs. my old DeWalt drill...

I had been using an older DeWalt drill, which was fine. But during a larger bathroom remodel project, its battery started to fail, and given the price of a new battery, I thought an entirely new drill was smarter.

This one came, and about once second after lifting it out of the box, I realized I had been using an inferior drill (for my needs), and that this one was going to be much more enjoyable to use.

First of all, its compact size is GREAT. My old drill, in hindsight, was pretty heavy and unwieldy. This just feels like a tool designed for the kind of light projects I do, and is much easier to wield, especially for long periods of time. I can almost throw it in my pocket as I'm working, it's that compact and light. That would have been laughable with my old drill.

Yet, power seems about equal compared to my old drill. I mixed up some thinset and some grout using a mixer attachment and it powered right through it; never hesitated for second. The battery also seems to last longer than expected, and it charges relatively fast, IMHO.

The little flashlight (which my old drill didn't have) along with the battery gauge, are very handy features. The bag it comes in is nice enough, and I like that it comes with two batteries.

The only picky downside is that the bit holder that you can attach to the back of the drill kind of seems like an afterthought. Personally, I'm not frequently switching between different DRIVING bits; I'm more likely to be switching between a driving bit and a drilling bit. So spots for multiple driving bits are kind of unneeded (and it looks kind of wonky.) That's just me, though.

Overall, this seems like a great drill for the average homeowner or the light DIYer so far. Hopefully its long-term durability is another positive...!

I have owned my Bosch PS32 for almost 2 years. These are my impressions:

- It is very lightweight
- It is small enough to work inside cabinets and other tight spots.
- It has enough torque to drive #10 deck screws into construction lumber without pre-drilling, and it doesn't feel like I'm abusing the tool when I do it
- The power is easy to control for both light and heavy work
- The battery life is excellent, and the drill still has plenty of power after sitting on a shelf for months

I like a 12v drill because it gives a lot of power and usability in a small package. I have used this drill to screw 2x4s together, build a workbench, install light fixtures and cabinet drawers and deadbolts, hang pictures and curtain rods, and as an all-purpose screwdriver. It's great for all of those tasks.

What would I change? The drill will not stand up by itself -- most cordless drills will stand upright with the battery serving as a base, but this one won't, so I just lay it on its side.

Would I buy a 12v impact driver? Probably not, but a 12v drill is awesome. 99% of the time I reach for this one and I'm done with the task in less time than it would take to find an extension cord for a corded drill. You won't see these on a construction site, but they make a ton of sense for a homeowner.

I picked this drill for two reasons:

One: It is MUCH smaller and MUCH lighter than ordinary cordless drills, which is a great boon for my old, arthritic joints. Ergonomically I find it excellent. If I ever had to work in tight quarters - say - under a sink, this drill will be easy, and a full-size cordless might be well-nigh impossible. It will also be far easier to use for my model aircraft building work than any full-size cordless. So much more maneuverable!

Two: It is brushless. Brushless motor controllers by their nature can provide much better speed and torque modulation. This one is infinitely variable, where a lot of bigger drills are just two-speed. When driving Phillips-head screws you can start out very slowly to prevent the bit from camming out of the screw head. Something my old 2-speed B&D was altogether too good at.

Battery capacity is such that you won't be using this to drive half a zillion deck screws, nor for drilling half-inch holes in boiler plate, but for typical household repair/maintenance jobs, it is perfect. The 200 inch-pounds of torque was more than plenty to drive 3-inch #10 screws into the rock hard oak framing in my antique abode, which is the first job I did with it. Battery indicator still shows "full", BTW, after pre-drilling the backerboard with a masonry bit as well as driving the screws.

A plus feature of the Li-ion battery is its' very low self-discharge rate. If I charge this and don't use it for a month or two, it'll still be ready to go, unlike NiCad and NiMH cells which will be half-way to flat in that time. (If you know that the tool won't be used for, say, a year, it's best to discharge the battery about halfway, however. They keep better that way.)

3/8" keyless chuck works fine. There's been some griping on-line about Bosch keyless chucks, but it doesn't apply to this one.

Bottom line - I paid nearly double what a consumer grade Lowes/Home Despot cordless drill goes for, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

This is an excellent product!

I am already the proud owner of the original Bosch PS21 (no longer available on Amazon, only from Bosch directly) and I thought it was perfect. This product, the Bosch PS32-02, actually takes an already amazing tool, and adds a keyless chuck, a far better torque system, and it also improves the light which now STAYS ON when you release the trigger. Which alone is proof that the product engineers at Bosch, actually use the tools they design.

PROS:
- excellent quality
- very powerful for its size, and even more powerful than drills twice the size in some cases!
- the keyless chuck barely takes up any room, and actually improves the balance of the original tool design!
- the brush-less motor, is incredibly responsive and powerful. I did not think they could improve on the power of the original PS21, but I was wrong... and happily admit it. Publicly.
- the newer version batteries are better also.

CONS:
- It does not do the work itself.... Seriously, I have nothing to put here, I have not found any cons at all.

I actually bought this as a gift for someone else, and now, I want one REALLY badly! But, my original PS21 still works perfectly! What to do? I bought the Hitachi 725405 3/8-Inch Keyless Conversion Chuck http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001717COS to try and make older model more like this newer one, but it still does not have the new light innovation, or the better batteries; it STILL WORKS PERFECTLY after many years. I am sorely temped to buy the newer model for myself after examining it and trying it out. Now they say the newer design lasts even longer, and is twice as reliable.... wow, I have not had a single problem with the older one ... how can they improve that!

Just a great drill. Small and lightweight, yet lots of torque. I bought it for home use and it has not let me down yet. The only complaint I have is the forward, reverse button is a little to easy to push and I sometimes push it to the neutral position in error, try to drill and the trigger is locked. Annoying but for the convenience of this drill, I wouldn't be without it.
