These spade bits are some of the best around, they will go through ANYTHING!!!!! Just one thing......you HAVE to be using a very high-torque drill. So, if you are using say a 14-volt cordless cheapy, the drill is going to bog down quickly, because these bits are "threaded" and they pull the bit into and through the wood. Like I said before you need high-torque, so use a corded drill or at least a decent 18-volt, you will be MUCH happier!!!!!!!

While I was in college, I worked on a student-run carnival which involved the construction of several large playhouses, entirely from wood. Erecting these structures required the work of hundreds of college students over the course of an entire week, working 24/7 (literally, day and night). It also required lots of bolts, which is where these spade bits came in handy. Drilling the holes for bolts requires boring all the way through several adjoining 2x4s, and normal spade bits often stop "biting' after punching through the first stud, and after a few studs, normal spade bits start to get dull, and both situations require you to leverage yourself and really strain to get your hole cut. These bits, however, cut through the wood like its butter, without so much as a whimper. I can understand the other reviewer's frustration, because I did have some friends try to use my bits in their drills, and their drills just weren't able to provide the necessary torque to keep these aggressive bits turning.

When paired with my 18v bosch cordless drill with LED light, these bits saved me a LOT of trouble. There were times when i was drilling a hole in a pitch-black corner in the middle of the night, between two studs, standing on top of a ladder (I know, bad idea), where i couldn't get much leverage at all, and all i did was shine the light where i needed the hole and point the screw tip towards it, and fire. The threads catch really quickly, and pull the bit right through the wood, requiring minimal leverage or force or effort on your part. The best part is that they really do keep cutting longer than traditional spade bits, so you don't need to change them as often, so they kind of pay for themselves.

These wood boring bits work very well at making holes. The threaded tips work well at pulling the bit though the wood. You don't need to apply much pressure to the drill, the bits do the work for you. The holes are a bit rough, and tend to splinter wood when they break through the other side of the hole. I use them for making holes in studs & joists for running wire, cables, water supply lines, etc. Any roughness & splintering is not important in this kind of application where the woon will typically be hidden. To prevent such splintering, you can always use a back-up board over the exit area of the wood you are drilling. In any case, these bits are not really meant for fine woodworking. If you're making furniture or doing finish work, forstner bits or brad point bits make a nicer, more accurate hole.

I began my design of my wife's climbing wall, and saw that this bit was highly recommended by other wall builders. With a climbing wall, you use t-nuts on the back side of the plywood you mount for a climbing surface. So, I took 6 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood and clamped them in a stack and drilled through the stack, 12 rows of 6. As soon as the small tip grabs the wood it pulls itself through wood with aggression. I did find that, at least with plywood, drilling a shallow hole in each spot with a small bit made for an immediate grab by this bit. The only warning I give is you can't really take it easy drilling through with this.

This is one solidly engineered tool! Simply put if your goal is to create a hole through wood quickly, this is your bit. If your goal is to drill to a certain depth and stop, this might not be your first choice.

The center screw bites quickly and pulls the bit into the wood without the ability to control the speed. This could be dangerous if you don't have a good grip on your drill or the proper leverage like hanging off a ladder or working in an awkward position.

If I was using a corded drill and was drilling through studs in a house this would be my first choice hands down. I was using it to drill through driftwood only an inch or two then stopping and its impossible.

TIP- If you need to slow the bit take a grinder and take down the edges of the screw piece slightly and you will still have a sharp fast bit but will have control over the speed.

Really good bit for the price. Caution: it is not for use with a power drill unless you grind off the threads found on the tip of the bit...once you grind them off...then it can be used in a power drill...the other fix is to drill a pilot hole slightly bigger than the threaded tip and you can use a power drill without having to grind off the threads.

THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING BIT, BUT BUYER BEWARE, as you can read from the majority of reviews with less than 3-4 stars, the majority of these people are doing the WRONG THING with these bits. They can go through wood, plastic and some metal sheeting (I mostly drill into plywood) but the poor reviews come from people who aren't using the bit for how it's suppose to be. DO NOT USE THIS DRILL IF YOUR EITHER USING A BATTERY POWERED DRILL OR TRYING TO DRILL IN SLOWLY YOUR GOING TO GET HORRIBLE RESULTS. Lets be realistic, the bit is using almost flat edges to drill into straight wood, you need high speed and high torque to actually drill into the material; also, the larger the spade THE MOST TORQUE AND POWER YOU NEED, it's part of the reason why you don't see things like 5" spades because then the amount of torque need would beat most drills. Don't let reviews based on inexperience fool you! I've love this thing, remember it's all about torque, power, and confidence (if your going to be shaky or nervous using it you'll get bad results, as well if your not committed, once your in the material YOUR IN).
