Fast Speeds and High Torque

Part of the Bosch Brute Tough series, the HDH181-01 works at two beefy speeds--up to 420 RPM and up to 1,800 RPM--and it provides a maximum of 700 inch-pounds of torque. The 4-pole open frame motor and newly developed gearbox provide exceptional power. The 25+1 clutch settings included in this Brute Tough model and a variable-speed trigger help you match the best speed to the job, so you can achieve precise results.

Balanced Design and Easy Bit Changes

The HDH181-01's Durashield housing is constructed with ABS/nylon composite, which makes the housing flexible upon impact. Unlike competitive tools, which use a conventional plastic housing, Durashield will not crack and can easily withstand 12-foot drops.

The aluminum keyless 1/2-inch keyless chuck with Bosch Auto-Lock makes bit changes simple and quick with one hand--plus, its reduced nose weight enhances the balanced feel without reducing durability. The ergonomically designed handle and soft-grip wrapped housing offer a comfortable fit for extended working time. And for even greater convenience, LEDs provide illumination when you are working in dark or enclosed areas.

Flexible Power System

In addition to the 3.0 Ah HC lithium batteries included in this kit, this drill/driver can be used with can be used with Bosch's standard-capacity batteries from its 18-volt line--including the 1.3 Ah Slim Pack battery (model BAT609), the 1.5 Ah Slim Pack HC (model BAT610G), and the 2.6-Ah Fat Pack battery (model BAT618). If you're looking for a lightweight option, the Slim Pack is the perfect choice. If longer runtime is what you need, the Fat Pack will do the job.

The HDH181-01 comes with the ProVantage three-year protection plan, which guarantees two years of battery protection and one year of tool protection. Under this plan, you can receive two years of free battery replacements, tool replacement for one year, and a free tool repair package for the second and third years.

This drill is quite similar to the Makita BHP454 18V hammer drill kit. I made this quick little video to show how they both drill through a brick and how the LED light shines differently. The light position is different, with the Makita's LED near the trigger and Bosch's LED on top of the base. They're pretty evenly matched in performance. What I like most about the Bosch is the battery charge indicator light on the back of the battery, which the Makita does not have. I also prefer the Bosch silent battery charger with simple easy to understand charge status indicators, over the Makita's noisy-fan charger with its unusual charge indicators. Both are great hammer drills, and I'd say you can't go wrong with either one, but I give a slight edge to Bosch because of the battery and charger, plus it has more torque at 700 in-lbs vs. Makita's 560 in-lbs.

This is my first hammer drill (Bosch HDH181-01), so I have no experiences with other hammer drills. I have about half a dozen other Bosch tools, that have always impressed me with any project that I have tackled.

I purchased the HDH181-01 for a specific job. I had four (4) 3/8" x 5" anchor holes to drill for a ledger at the top of the stairs and three (3) more holes into a footer half way down the stairs. I did not want to purchase a tool that is dedicated to only drilling holes in concrete, which I do very little of. The HDH181-01 appeared to be a good choice, because I could use it for a heavy duty driller also. An additional feature was the 18V Fat Pack batteries that come with the HDH181-01. The Fat Pack batteries also fit some of my other Bosch products.

How did the HDH181-01 do with my project? It was amazingly fast! It took about one (1) minute for each hole. I now use it for a heavy duty driller and it works great as a driller also.

Bosch gets an A+ for another fine product.

Tool King got me the product within a week from ordering and they had the best price I could find at $236.88 shipped to my door. A+ Tool King!

I really enjoy using this Bosch Drill / Driver. It is so strong, yet fairly light, fits well in my hand, with long run time. The brake is amazing, so if something bites too hard, or you hit a snag, it won't break your wrist, as it stops IMMEDIATELY when you lift your finger off the trigger. The LED points to the actual tip of the bit on the work, and shines up from out of the way, as well as coming on with just the slightest push on the trigger. The battery has a power level indicator, and so you at least have an idea of the state of charge. The charger is Very fast. I haven't used the hammer part yet, but if it is anything like the rest of this beast, I am sure that I won't be disappointed. Did I forget to mention that it also comes in a nice heavy duty case? I cannot imagine anyone being unhappy with this Tough Drill.

The first thing to note about this drill/driver is that the battery doesn't know when to quit. Today I brought the drill, two full batteries and the charger to work, expecting that after hours of drilling out holes, removing powdercoat from steel with a wire brush wheel, running taps, I'd be jumping between half-charged batteries until I up and quit. I can't even tell you how many minutes this drill spent at full speed before the first battery hit the wall, because I quit for the day before the drill did. Absolutely amazing, the second battery and charger never even came out of my bag.

The selector switch for high torque and high speed was an easy miss at first, but now I check it every time. It seemed like my old 12v Black and Decker could drill a hole faster than this beast could, I was utterly shocked, until I found the switch on top and switched it to high speed. The rate at which I drilled through a 1/4 steel plate actually frightened me, I was through that plate before I even had a chance to react and marred the worktable surface beneath it pretty darn good.

This drill has a lot of heft to it, but it's also perfectly balanced, not too heavy up top and not too heavy in the battery, so using it in awkward positions is actually quite comfortable. The chassis of the whole drill just feels so solid. The trigger is smooth and it's easy to hit and hold the RPMs that you're aiming for. The light is perfectly positioned to illuminate the work area without getting blocked by your hands or workpieces. The case it comes in is even of quality construction, and two batteries and a beefy charger will keep you working many hours before even having to think about hanging it up for the day.

On price, it's definitely up there.

This is my fourth cordless tool from Bosch, I bought them recently.
They are all using the same batteries.
Excellent tools performance,
Batteries last a long time, and they're much lighter than ni-cad.

When I had the chance to review this item through Amazon Vine, I jumped on the opportunity. I am a homeowner who likes to do projects around the house, including woodwork building, home maintenance and repair. I already owned a Dewalt 18 volt XRP cordless hammer drill, so I thought it would be great to compare the two in actual use. The Dewalt had some positives over the Bosch, in that it has 3 speeds, and the high speed runs at a faster 2000 rpm. That said, I don't think it's fair to compare the two on an apples to apples basis, and rather I wanted to give the Bosch its due on its own merits, using the experience with the Dewalt for extra insight.

This Bosch is a 2 speed cordless hammer drill with trigger-based led lighting to help illuminate your drill site. Perhaps the led light could be considered dubious, but there are many times when I'm drilling in adequate light and the shadow of a drill can make it difficult to see your workspace. The led light eliminates that problem. It always turns on with the motor, and it has been very useful in my experience with it. One spec that I really liked, when comparing to my Dewalt, is that the Bosch is a lighter weight drill. My Dewalt is around 5.5 pounds, and this Bosch is just under 5 pounds. Just half a pound you say? Yep, but it does make a difference when you're slinging it around or working at odd angles. The lighter weight was a pleasure to use, and it causes me to never give thought to the weight of the drill when using it. I've done a few small home projects with the Bosch, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the long battery life and the power. The Bosch is rated up to 700 inch-pounds of torque, which is really good for a cordless.
