Don't buy this item. You'll be enticed about the savings at first. We had the plumber and the electrician visit twice within the first year to trouble shoot no hot water to no avail and no answers. For us it was a complete waste of money. We are in the process of contacting the manufacter for a refund. We got a traditional water heater installed for $600.

We got the RP17PT and it worked awesome for the first year. Then the filter was clogged, paid plumber to find out how to clean (ouch). Then 6 months later one of the heating elements would trip off after 2-3 minutes of working. Find out you have to "Descale" every 6 months or lines will clog causing heater to trip. We were never informed of this happening when we purchased the unit. Descaling kit is around $200, and you have to buy more solution, $20, every time you descale. Product works great when working, but having to do all of this maintenance is a major pain in the wallet and butt.

I inherited a RP27PT when purchasing a new home recently. As such, I can't speak to the unit's energy saving's but I can speak to its usability when compared to a traditional tank-type water heater:

Pros -
- Literally, endless hot water. When the daughter and her friends visit, this feature alone trumps everything else. We can run two showers simultaneously, as well as a shower with any other single appliance/faucet running with minimal effect on the hot water output.
- Space savings. In our smallish condo, the RP27 mounts high on the wall in a utility closet, freeing-up much-needed extra storage space.
- Peace of mind. No more worries about a traditional hot water heater tank failing...an important feature in a high-rise.

Cons -
- Price.
- Lack of hot water at low flow rates. The RP27 is simply not able to deliver a trickle of hot water. If you need such service, I've used (and recommend) the InSinkErator line of instant hot water dispensers. While this wasn't a deal-killer for me, it does take some getting used to.
- Slightly longer times to provide fully-hot water to the end-user. Again, not a deal-breaker to me but not only does it take a few seconds for the RP27 to get the cold inlet water up to temperature, it must also heat the first 18 - 24" of room-temperature outlet plumbing that would normally be pre-heated by the conduction of heat from the 50 gallons of hot water held in a tank-type water heater.

Bottom line; I've been pleased with the RP27. Taking the potential energy savings out of the equation, the access to endless hot water, the space saving, and the peace of mind have been worth the loss of low-flow hot water. If and when it needs to be replaced, I would purchase another tankless design and have no reason to not purchase another Bosch unit.
