Editorial Reviews

Chicago's South Side was the absolute epicenter of African-American creativity. In any other city, at any other time, they might've been a monstrously important band, but in the early 1970s, Boscoe was lost in the flurry of acts exploding musical genres to form "Great Black Music". While the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra's Arkestra and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble led the charge away from mainstream culture, past the borders and boundaries of commercial music, Boscoe's lone album was denied inclusion into the canon of Great Black Music only by its obscurity. An outsider even in an outsider subculture. This is a fine album of Conscious Jazz Funk that sits somewhere between Last Poets, Bama The Village Poet and Antibalas releases.

This should have been the first of many albums from Boscoe, but it came & went without much notice -- mainly because the band had integrity & refused to compromise their music in return for a big record deal, choosing to release it themselves. Now it returns like a powerful prophetic voice from the past, a potent brew of funk, fusion, politics & spirituality through visionary struggle. Man, do I miss music like this! Simply as music, it reaches down into the soul; Boscoe could play like nobody's business. Yet it's never mere agitprop or sloganeering -- these are songs, first & foremost. And the lyrical content has something real & urgent to say, something that still needs saying today, perhaps more than ever. This is music from a troubled but powerful era, where pride & righteous wrath spoke through soul & funk. Even the one love song is for a strong woman, sung by a man worthy of respect, as part of a vision for a better future. And the long concluding track, "Now and Den" -- it is beautiful, passionate, yearning & filled with fire. This is an astonishing album -- most highly recommended in every way!

I bought this on vinyl so I wouldn't know if there was a difference in audio quality with the cd, like that last review points out, but the vinyl sounds absolutely great. I've been collecting records for quite some time now and this by far is one of the best recordings of music I have ever listened to. They're fusion of different styles of music is what attracted me to this band to begin with, but their politically charged lyrics, probably controversial at the time, put them on top of my list. These guys don't hold back and I could feel the oppression these guys depict with their words. Musicians and poets way ahead of their time. It doesn't get better than this.

I ran across this on NPR. I have always liked pre-disco funk, War, early Funkadelic, What's Goin' On, Dr. John, Sly. This early stuff was too short lived, especially the political message that got lost so quickly. I have no problems with the sound. The bass playing is far advanced for anything of its time. A lost classic that combines politics and spirituality normally so oppossed to each other. The current cultural climate needs this resurrection.

Please know that this cd is not at all the quality of recording that we've come to expect with mastering and technical recording. This is rather what one would get from tape recording an OLD record of BOSCOE. I am glad to have it because I remembered them very well, but I do not have the record. It is wonderful to see how much ahead of their time they were; that a major part of the 1960s was BOSCOE's voice and dynamic. The liner notes in a booklet are great! Get it for the historical record of their only record.
