Great sound quality compared to similar systems. I use it all the time. The sound quality of the Series III seems even better than the series II, the detail is more precise, the sound seems even more real. Other improvement is the ac adapter, which seems better made and the connectors fit together better. Other change (beside the dock which now fits the iPhone 5), is that it no longer has a + and - sound button on the main body of the devise. You either need to use the sound buttons on the iPhone or the remote. My remotes for my previous models haven't lasted well, so I was a bit disappointed with this, although it makes the model look a little sleeker.
I now have one upstairs and one downstairs in my house and am happy. I use an adaptor with my Series II so that I can use either my old iPod with it (without the convertor adaptor) or my new iPhones with the adaptor. You can get a similar adaptor for this to be able to use older models on it, but haven't tried it yet.
My intent was to buy a competitor to this unit the day after Christmas, but I received the Bose Sounddock 2 as a Christmas gift. Its outstanding with my iPhone 4 set to "Rock" for a bit of treble and bass boost. Bass is full and tight, much deeper than I expected from such small speakers. For tracks with very deep bass punch there will be holes...4" drivers can only go so low, but the limits are way down there and I can't imagine any small unit can go there anyway. I've been on a Moby kick lately, and the Sounddock handles almost all of his ever-present bass. Treble is fine...present but not over-boosted. All the detail is there, but it doesn't sound artificial or over-done. But where I think the Bose really excels is in the midrange. Vocals are perfectly clear and distinct, shockingly so. Its difficult to describe, but I really do feel that I hear much more of the music with this unit. It isn't at all "tinny" like cheap units that over-boost midrange. Its...just right.
Overall sound is superb, rich with detail. Cello is full with all the bite and edge of a live performance. Opera is beautifully balanced with unbelievably clear and detailed vocals perectly balanced with the orchestra. Anything acoustic is as life-like as I've ever heard with the subtle details that aren't easily reproduced in recordings...guitar, strings, drums, etc. Rhythm and big bass are tight, with much better than expected low-frequency response. Also, whether at high or low volume the sound is the same...something you wont hear with lesser-quality audio bits. So much to my surprise Bose has won me over with a well-balanced and superbly-detailed sound. Hope this review is useful to you.
There are two versions of this dock. I bought the 30 pin one to fit my original iPod because I refuse to feed the Apple monster and blow $300 every 2 years just to stay current with the latest gadget when my classic works fine. The USB might be standard on the lightning version that fits the newer iPods but I don't know...
My biggest complaint is that customer service was unwilling to process an overnight shipment of the new product and told me it would take 10-12 business days once they received confirmation of shipment of the defective unit. What is this 1999? Even the Rep. who was very professional strongly suggested I return to Amazon...I agree. You would think Bose would step up to the plate for a loyal customer. I hope this is not indicative of Bose's current build quality.
