Update: I give it one extra star since I was able to find a trick to solve the issue. Maybe it is just a firmware issue and an update may solve the problem: I connected the unit to the USB power supply, press the three dots button for about 15 seconds, press the power button and it come alive again... I'm not happy with the lack of support. If the issue is so easy to solve, the troubleshooting guide should be available.
Added more stars: the issue happened once again after a lot of using the speakers, but it was easy to solve again.
Again the bloody unit goes completely dead. Press and hold power button ---> NOPE. Plug into AC outlet --> NOPE, AC USB plug ---- > NOPE.. Since I'm an engineer, I start going from the AC plug and work my way backwards testing every component. Everything works well. Just the unit decided to die (completely non-responsive to power button) NO LIGHTS when connected to power. So I figured maybe hardware is fine and it was the silly software people who messed it up.
I looked on Bose website all their solutions (For link go to Bose website, Amazon blocks all links) Completely not useful. Then you follow the white rabbit down into the hole where it says if it doesn't work when connected to power do this .... (hold multifunction for 10 + seconds) WTH! where is that on the manual?
After pressing the Lazarus (3 dots) button then it came back to live. Why would Bose make a multifunction button that "cuts" power to the whole unit? The power button should control power. There is something clearly missing from the user interface people. Great product bad user interface cost money. I thought that I had a lemon so I returned it which costs at least $3.99 (assumed) to amazon to return and then another $3.99 (assumed) to ship a new one plus sending the old one to the "magic land of returns." Assuming the price is about $20 total to return on a unit that costs $129 and probably ~$30 to fabricate that seems painful. It hurts: PROFIT. Then I read the plethora of other people complaining online about dead batteries and unresponsive units. Huhhhh.. Also thank you Amazon from protecting us one link at a time.
Hopefully the Lazarus button fixes most of the issues with this unit. Bose should consider making the power button into Lazarus button given that it is a software thing that can be fixed with a program.
And the Soundlink II does sound good, much like the first, but it DOES have a major problem, right off the bat! That problem is that the power transformer, i.e. the power "block" seems to be missing! In fact, I think it is no longer included whith the package (having heard something to that effect earlier)! WTF? Isn't that kind of like delivering a new car without tires ("we thought you'd like to buy your own")? Every single electronic device I ever bought included one, so Bose is the vanguard of an evil trend?
That power transformer only costs $5 or less, but who are they to assume I don't mind buying my own? What business is it of theirs to assume I have one lying around anyway, so why not save themselves $0.50 (what those cost wholesale, or to make en mass)? Should I assume THEY wouldn't mind if I short-changed THEM $5?
Still, I don't need to be told that it has a full charge every time I turn it on (after charging all night). What I need is to be informed (an indicator light would be far better than a voice) when the charge is low, something other reviewers tell us it fails to do. Time will tell, but in general, I am much happier with this speaker than I was with its predecessor.
On the plus side, it seems Bose has relocated the power cord socket to the edge of the unit. Hopefully they have toughened it up a bit as well.
UPDATE: I have added a star, because unlike my previous Soundlink speaker, this one has, so far, worked perfectly! It connects immediately to my iPhone, without having to screw around, without a lot of false messages, and without the frustration I often felt with the previous version. I don't know if that example was defective, or if it was typical of that model, but THIS version (or example) seems to work much better. I would give it 5 stars if not for that annoying voice regularly telling me stuff I don't need to know! At least in this case, it has so far always been accurate.
