I've been using SoundSports and their predecessors for years, going through about 1 pair a year due to nearly all-day use at work, but all of that wear and tear was simply on/off, volume up/down, putting on and taking off. About six months ago I made a decision to 'get in shape', and so for the first time I started putting these through their paces on the 'Sport' side of things. They do not hold up.
I've now suffered the same fatal issue twice in six months with the Bose SoundSport earbuds, namely that if you get some sweat on the control pad there's a seemingly decent chance that you're going to short it out and find yourself with dead $100 earbuds. The second time this happened was the final straw, and I'm now testing alternatives for better resilience to active use.
UPDATE July 19: It is has been shy of 1 month having used these earbuds, roughly a total of 15 - 5mi outdoor runs in the TX heat. They are done. First sign was when they decided to turn on by themselves randomly at max volume while sitting on the counter while still connected to the iPod (this happened in the middle of the night twice.)... Then the volume would randomly increase to max high then max low while mid-run. Then the static started in the left bud and gradually worsened. The remote is completely responsive now.. I tested on 2 different iPods. Luckily it's within 2 days of return status...Hopefully I can return these without issue.
I like to workout, and wanted some earbuds which would be perfect for the gym, and the SoundSport seemed to fit the bill, so I ordered mine. When they came I was pretty giddy, I'll admit. But that faded pretty quick as I plugged them into my mp3 player and started to exercise. The earbuds--in MY personal estimation, were kinda crap...but not necessarily for the reasons you might think. They SOUNDED great, but unfortunately, they were designed to allow ambient outside noise to creep in so those who wear them while exercising outside, possibly in traffic, can be hyper aware of their surroundings, which is perfect--except it let in SO much outside noise it was almost to the point of a distraction. I wear a Samsung Gear S3 smart watch which keeps track of my exercising. It reminds me every 5 minutes by telling me my heart rate, calories burned etc. using its pretty weak speaker. I could easily hear my watch every 5 minutes as I worked on the elliptical. Sorry, but for me, that is like way TOO much.
Since I workout in the gym, outside noise isn't a factor, but what do you do to fix it? I noticed while looking online that the eartips on the Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling earbuds were different...and I connected the dots and ordered a pair of eartips for the QuietComfort and they fit like a glove and the difference is absolutely phenomenal. Suddenly, audio that was completely lost before with the previous eartips was not only now easily heard, but the new tips helped to isolate the audio so much better. Honestly, Bose should include these kinds of tips for those people like me who don't need the outside noise to interfere with what I'm listening to. Seriously, the difference was like night and day. The old ones let in so much outside noise that you cannot fully appreciate the great Bose sound. But with the substitution, NOW I could hear the difference, and boy was it dramatic.
Let's be honest, Bose are miracle workers when it comes to audio reproduction. They do it pretty much better than almost everyone else. Suddenly my earbuds that I so badly wanted, finally lived up to the expectations I had hoped for. Bass is full, the Highs are crisp, the Mid's were just as clear. Almost like wearing my Sony studio monitor, and that, my friends is an accomplishment for such a small device.
The one area where I truly believe Bose suffers, almost more than any other audio manufacturer, is in build quality. You might think differently, but if you compared Bose headphones or earbuds to similar devices, you'll see it immediately, and if not right away, you'll definitely notice that when you use them frequently. I've always found their stuff to be nowhere as durable as almost any other pair of similar like devices available, and let's be honest, for what they make you pay, I honestly believe every possible effort should be used to make them as durable as possible. Even the Sport earbuds seemed a bit frail, especially the cords. I really felt that if I didn't take extra good care, they'd fray and break pretty quick, even though they are almost brand new. Being in the broadcast industry, I am pretty familiar with how to treat electronic equipment with kid gloves, so I think mine will last a bit longer than most, but that is just a guess. I know not everyone will share my opinion, but I am not just a casual audiophile when it comes to headphones/earbuds. I know my stuff, and it pains me to admit this, but the build quality just isn't as good as most others--even if the sound quality is just about as good as it gets.
In short, if you want truly superior audio quality, but you aren't afraid to spend the extra money for earbuds that may not last as long as you'd hope for, especially for the money, you really cannot do better. However, if you want better sound, order some additional eartips like I mentioned above (they weren't expensive, mine cost less than $6.00) and you'll find a whole new appreciation for their audio capabilities.

I already have a collection of headphones that range from cheap throwaways to £300 Bose bluetooth QuietComfort. I have a set of Apple EarPods which are amazing for dog walking but they are slightly muffled - they block ambient noise rather than cleveryly cancel it like Bose QuietComforts do. QuietComforts are amazing but I like to hear ambient sounds when home alone (knock at the door for example) and I do like to wear something that you almost forget you're wearing...
That's where these come in. I actually do forget I'm wearing them.
The sound is not £300 Bose quality but the sound is accurate. There's no fake bass boosting but there's enough bass if the recording contains it. There's no unnatural EQing which some headphones have (hence the 'fake bass' that gives some headphones that kick in the lows).
Listening to voice (audiobooks, workshop videos) these produce a natural sound. With well produced music they shine. There's a few Spotify playlists that contain hundreds of selected 'well produced' tracks and they show the quality of these headhones.
These headphones won't blow your mind but they will satisfy, gently and naturally.
Original: Same issue as one or two others; with the bundled StayHear ear tips, you could still hear everything else going on around you in detail, and the audio from the earphones felt distant and not especially deep.
Buying a separate pair of StayHear Ultra tips especially completely changes the sound. Whilst they don't offer complete noise isolation – for me at least – it is noticeably reduced by a large amount. And the sound! Far, far better for me once the StayHear Ultra tips were fitted. Much happier now.
If Bose bundled the StayHear Ultra tips with these from the beginning, they'd be a 5-star product. As it stands, I'm giving them 4 for the inconvenience; if I'd not known about other people recommending the separate Ultra tips already, I'd probably have sent them back as defective.
Also ab damit zurück Bose!
Für meine Ansprüche also optimal.
Honestly, they are 5 star headphones and well worth the investment. I have never had headphones of any design where I could comfortable wear them for an extended period of time. These I have worn on a regular basis for 8-10 hours daily, with 0 irritation. The design is such that allows airflow into the ear, reducing any irritation that you may be familiar with from closed passive noise cancellation type buds or over-ears. This comes at a cost as external sound is also able to travel into your ear. This 'shortcoming' makes them perfect for any outdoor activities where you would want to remain aware of traffic or other sounds. In my case, absolutely perfect for the office where I can comfortably listen to whatever but be confident that I will hear when someone speaks to me.
In loud environments (I'm looking at you air travel!!) these are going to let you down. The external noise simply overpowers the headphone driver and you are either turning the volume up uncomfortably high or are not able to differentiate between headphone and external sound, effectively drowning out what you are listening to. ...but these were not designed for that environment, nor do they claim to be.
Where they lost stars (for me) was the post design. The plug/post is larger than perhaps necessary, and certainly too large for today's era of larger smartphones. When placing the phone, with headphones connected in your front pants pocket, the large post becomes an issue. Pressure when sitting puts strain on the cord. In my case, after about a year this caused (I am assuming) a microbreak in one of the wires internally, resulting in the volume/pause controls randomly firing. (As I walked the headphones would start/stop what I was listening to, or change the volume.)
Despite the above issue, I have never had headphones that I could wear so long comfortably, and had absolutely no concerns with purchasing another pair.
