Product Description

Made by Bosmere who has been supplying quality garden tools and accessories since 1979. Using Bosmere's soft copper tags with a ball point pen results in permanent shrub and tree labeling that lasts for years and years. These labels provide an inconspicuous way to label shrubs and trees. Use for recording the name of plant, date planted, the source of the shrub, color, etc. The copper face of the tag will darken over time and develop a nice patina. Each 4-inch long by 0-3/4-inch wide copper tag comes with copper ties. 20 tags per package.

I used to buy this type of tag in aluminum but they apparently are no longer available. I tried to buy metal tags at local nurseries and big box hardware stores alike to no avail so was delighted to find them on Amazon. They last a long, long time and because they're embossed the writing doesn't fade. My dog likes to remove and chew up the plastic labels that come with plants, which is not good for many reasons. He doesn't seem interested in having metal in his teeth (yet, anyway!). As far as the ease of embossing, you need to follow their suggestions and use a ballpoint pen and a pliable surface. I find the cardboard back of a writing tablet to be perfect. It works best if you print slowly in block letters. The only thing that could have been better would be to get them in a recloseable plastic bag, they're sealed up in a nice heavy bag but you have to cut it open and then it's useless.

All as advertised. Easy to write names of trees and shrubs
on the tags. Do not rust. Be sure to use a ball point pen,
press hard, and use a magazine under the tag.

These thin, malleable, labels are of good material quality copper, and afford a generously proportioned wire tie. The edges were sufficiently milled that they didn't cut my fingers off during use. I've used both a battery-operated etching tool and vanadium-steel stamps with great results, although stamping will return the most durable marking.

After reading reviews and attempting to read my handwriting, I decided I would make a template. I used Word and drew a 4" high x 3/4" wide rectangle. Then I put text inside at a 90 degree counter clockwise turn using Lucinda Calligraphy. Repeat for all ten on the same paper. Then I taped the tags to the underside of the printed sheet, matching the rectangles. I traced the front side of the printed sheet using a ball point pen and placing a magazine under the tags taped to the paper. It turned out beautifully! I'm going to try to upload pictures. (Note, I used duct tape and it was TOO much! Scotch tape will serve the purpose nicely).

Also, you can use the pants hangers from the dry cleaners (cardboard bottom, wire hook and sides...there is a hook where the hanger meets the cardboard. Remove the cardboard, cut the hanger where the hanging part bends on each side. You end up with two 7-8" hanging hooks!

Look at my pinterest to see pics. [...]

3 year Update
Had to lower my rating to 2 stars. After 3 years, the tags have oxidized to the point that our embossed letters are no longer legible. We have had to replace over 100 of these copper tags with more durable zinc coated tags made by Paw Paw. I would not recommend copper tags for outdoor plants.

Original Review:
These work pretty well for labeling our fruit trees and rose bushes. We've been using them for about three years and the some of the labels are hard to read now because the copper slowly corrodes. Don't let these tags come in contact with the soil and be sure to "engrave" them using a lot of pressure with your ball point been. The deeper the engraving the longer the writing will remain readable.

These look great on my grafted fruit trees. Very helpful in identifying the varieties. Real copper, not copper-colored. I took a torch to a few of them to bring out some cool color effects. Inscribing them was simple too. I used a cutoff knitting needle which works perfectly.

They are suitable for the purpose, but they are quite thin – 0.005" – about as thin as an aluminum can. Write on them with a ball point pen and the impression will last. Don't press too hard.

Needed something that would hold up to all of the weather changes here in Central Texas. Went with these copper tags to identify trees, created a unique numbering system for each tree (10 characters each), used a Tekton 5/16 letter/number stamp set to create the tag, and hung them out on the cages surrounding each tree. I realize that there has been some discussion around using copper on a tree; while I have never had an issue, I don't use wire to tag trees anyway, since it can scar and embed in the bark. When I remove the cages, I'll use plastic wire ties on a branch and then wire the tag to the tie. As an initial impression, these are working well. I also plan on doing the same with a set of aluminum tags, and then report back in a couple of years. As a side note, the tags whipping into the cages produce a nice wind chime effect. With luck, my new trees and tags will last many years together.
