Boss always makes a great product and I own quite a few of their stomp boxes. This thing is great as a bass overdrive! There are other bass overdrives/distortions out there, but most of them are going to cost you a little bit more. They aren't worth it. Pick this up and be done with it. It has all the controls over your distortion so you can dial in a smooth tone. Its built rock solid as well and it you find that you don't like it, Boss products hold a high resale value.
One complaint I do have with this pedal is the amount of noise it puts into your signal. When its turned off, its fine, but click it on and there is a hiss. No real way to get this out that I can see. As long as you are playing you're not able to hear it. So as long as its not sitting there left on, you won't hear it.
Within a few minutes I was able to dial in a smooth tone, one that didn't destroy the low end of the bass, but didn't sound muddy. I've gotten everything from a light overdrive, to a raunchy fuzz, to a balls to the wall distortion. I can really use this on songs such as Lakini's Juice by Live and a few other covers. Good tool to have for bass solos as well, so they don't stick out like a sore thumb as much.
My verdict is, if you are in the market for a bass overdrive, its worth picking up. Its going to be your cheapest bet, unless you want a completely worthless piece of crap. Its going to have a high resale value if you decide its not for you. Whats to lose? Just in a few days I have found tons of uses for it, you just have to keep an open mind. It will make you more versatile.
When people new to bass start looking into effects and tone and amps, etc. one of the most overlooked things in the whole thing (and I see this happen a lot) is equalization. 9 times out of 10, when you think you're not loud enough and you need to turn up or get more wattage, you really just need to properly EQ your signal. Cutting and boosting various frequencies will make your sound cut through and be easily heard. I also use a compressor/limiter in my rig but with proper EQ, I can often do without the compressor too!
Want that tight punchy *thump* that kicks you in the chest? EQ
Want to be able to play with a strong pluck but not overdrive your gear and sound like a mess? Sure a compressor does that for you but you can often just do it with proper EQ (save money! Why buy 2 pedals if you can do it with one?)
Want to get your ONE bass to sound like 3 different basses (not at the same time)? EQ
This pedal is compact, the case is die-cast aluminum, the bottom is rubber for improved grip, the toe kick pad is rubber to keep your foot from slipping off when you are trying to actuate the pedal, the sliders are easy to move, the markings are easy to see, and the sliders really make a very noticeable effect on your tone. "A little dab will do ya!" as they used to say. The sliders cut or boost a frequency 15dB...that's a lot! Boosting or cutting a freq just 5 dB makes a difference you can hear in your tone so this pedal gives you lots of room to shape your tone.

The actual drive sounds... okay I guess. Not very "natural" sounding but I think the CUHLASSIC RAWK TOAN is overrated anyway so it works for me.
I would recommend this pedal to anyone who doesn't have enough bass and/or drive and desires lots and lots of bass and/or drive.
If you play blues or reggae you can get deep and strong sounds by lowering the mids and you will love this thing. There are some special settings if you are into slapping and such.
I study a little bit of sound theory and this pedal works awesome to create a natural distortion, just increase the mids and level knobs all the way and put all the gain in your amp, it will create a nice tone special for metal, crust and alternative music that need a violent bass. Just be careful and keep a low volume if your amp is not that strong you can damage it!
Best thing ever. Period
