The designs have a crisp look to them that I find very appealing. I chose to do a mandala which included lots of plants and some insects as my first project. I used soft lead coloring pencils and was very happy with the layering I was able to do on this paper.
Here is an overview of what I found in this physical book:
39 Designs Featuring Birds and other Nature subjects
Printed on one side of medium weight, white perforated paper
Designs do not merge past the perforations
Alcohol and water-based markers bleed through this paper
Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows of color on the back of the page
Coloring pencils work well for my use (soft lead blended and layered well but hard lead did leave dents on the back of the page.
While I used pencils for my first project, I am sure to use wet coloring medium in the future. When I do so, plan to either remove the page from the book or put a blotter sheet of card stock under the page I am working on to keep seeping ink or marring dents from damaging the pages below.
"Birds and Botanicals" contains 39 illustrations and 2 pages of introductory material. It measures approx. 8.5 x 11 inches and is glue bound into a colorable matte finish cover. Featuring black and white line drawings, this book is appropriate for colorists 15+ on all skill levels.
The paper in this book is bright white and mid-weight. All pages are single sided and perforated. All mediums should be okay to use, but wet products will bleed through. Be sure to place several sheets of blotter paper under your current picture to avoid color transfer.
As the title implies, the artwork in "Birds and Botanicals" features birds and flowers. Inside you'll see a variety of bouquets, berry branches, decorative vases, pattern pages, birds in flight, feathers, and more. There are also some butterflies and seashells thrown in for a bit of variety- as well as a few mandala style pictures. Although many of the images cover to the edges of the page, all artwork does end at the perforation line, if not before. Print quality is clean and detail level varies a bit between pages. Picture completion time should range from 3-10 hours(may be slightly different for each individual). Overall, this is a really beautiful book with some nice features. It would be best suited for colorists who enjoy intricate, nature inspired imagery.
