The women find themselves employed at an elaborate Italian estate that enables both women to work in the field that they love. Of course there is no happy ending at this point as an ex love of one of the women appears on the scene. Both women are attracted to her and deal with the struggle of what this means for them individually and as a couple. And while they are working through this dilemma there appears to be an arson who has targeted the property on which they live, setting fire to outbuildings on the property and placing the women and the animals at great risk. The emotions that the women go through in this entire book or a complex mixture of being frightened, feelings of jealousy, and most of all feelings of an incredible love. And yes of course throughout the book there is just outstanding sex scenes and BDSM exploration. The manner in which Murphy explains and works out the BDSM scenes left me with a better understanding of why some women are extremely attracted to this genre.
I highly recommend this book for all that it brings to the reader. With beautiful character development, a strong plot, intrigue, and a dramatic life change for all characters you won't be disappointed in the book.
I liked Octavia, Bridget and Vivian. They are very different in what they want from BDSM. Bridget's sort of a bratty, defiant type of sub, always testing the boundaries and more into being put in her place than physical pain. She also enjoys the play but would not like it as a lifestyle. Octavia seems to be the most into it as a lifestyle. She is a switch who really needs to explore on "both sides of the whip"--for Bridget she's a domme, for Vivian it depends on the day, but all the time she has an intense respect and need when she's involved in a scene. Vivian is also a sort of switch but more on the domme side, and is what Octavia calls a Mistress. That these three can get together and fill each other's needs in very different ways is what largely drives the stories, seeing how they relate differently to each other and build their relationship. And that aspect, I really enjoyed seeing.
On the other hand, I did feel that this story, while functional as erotica, is somewhat lacking in plot. We get a lot of summary on the three characters' backstories, but don't see much how it affects them. Octavia and Bridget's relationship is already stable and established, and their relationship with Vivian forms quickly, as if it's a foregone conclusion that just needs time to snap into place. There's a subplot involving arson, but it felt like an afterthought. The most plot is related to relationship development, which is good, but I kind of wanted more, because most minor conflicts related to boundaries or jealousy just kept on working out really fast or being derailed by the smut.
Probably I'd recommend it for showing BDSM that isn't just dom/sub but a lot of role-switching and negotiation (as well as actual safeword use, which I like to see--reinforces that it's all SSC if it's demonstrated that the person CAN get out), and interesting poly dynamics. Not so much for the romance aspect or a more complex plot.
I received an ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
