This book started getting rave reviews from authors I respect and read regularly, I read the synopsis, dug what it seemed to be about and on a whim, put this on my to be read list.
And voila! I recieved it as a Father's day gift from my fiance.
Basically, from the moment I opened the book to the moment I closed it, I was absolutely captivated. Pace is everything to me when reading, and Hepler nails a pace here that's just blistering. An excellent writer, really, who knows his timing in ways that is rarely seen in the genre. ..he knows when to be subdued, when to keep things to the reader's imagination, when open all cannons and turn them up to 11. A skill to behold, my friends, a skill to behold.
Every note is hit on the head in a fantastic way. I guess if I could make one request, it's that we learned more about Luther....but the way things turn out, I guess we don't really need to. In fact, it was really a great surprise for on how things turn out.
Seth, our main character here, is wonderfully written, with his motives making total sense, his rationale being incredibly human and familiar to anyone who has been dealt a less than ideal hand. I was very much engaged with the character, felt incredibly sorry for the guy very often.
Overall, the book is just perfect. Especially considering that this is Hepler's first book. I'm pretty sure this will be making my top horror reads of the year...I can't wait for his next work!
ready for some more stuff from the author
