Kate Lund, PSY.D, draws on her training as a psychologist, experience in her practice and classroom, and her own childhood challenges to create a framework for parents and caregivers to teach children resilience. Filled with practical information and strategies for school and sports, Lund details principles (pillars) that will help children overcome situations that test them. Particularly helpful are the action steps at the end of every chapter. Accessible and a quick read, this book is ideal for the busy parent looking for practical tools to help their child successfully navigate life. Beyond the action steps and strategies, Lund acknowledges that some children may need individual coaching by a professional. Curious about what children think about the pillars? Be sure to read the last chapter; you might just be surprised.

The primary focus in this book is to teach parents, teachers, and community leaders how to foster resilience in the early stages in life so that children can develop their full potential. Children need to learn how to bounce back from misfortune and adversity in order to continue to move forward and ultimately achieve maximum potential. Young people must develop a tool box of coping skills to manage their frustrations and emotions. Lund presents seven pillars including navigating friendships and social pressures, sustaining focus and attention skills, developing courage, the motivation to succeed, and a spirit of confidence that will lead to optimism and continued forward momentum.
The author bases her book on her own personal experiences in overcoming challenges and studies of elementary school children as a psychologist for the past fifteen years. Lund includes a short autobiography and a list of resources for further study at the conclusion of her book. I would recommend this book to parents and teachers as well as anyone interested in developing the full potential of society's future leaders.

This is a terrific resource for anyone who has a child! Some kids are naturally more resilient than others. But all youngsters experience frustrations, setbacks and failures. How they manage them and how their PARENTS manage them is key. One of the major issues with our society today is that we tend to live with a "win at all costs" mentality. But no one can win all the time. Setbacks happen, illness happens, failures happen. It's what we do with them that matters most. This book offers valuable lessons for parents as well as children. Sometimes winning isn't everything and setbacks and frustrations are a net positive for living a balanced life. I think this book speaks to that splendidly. It has a great message for us all - young and old.

We all tend to want to make the world "perfect" for our children, Realistically though, all children need to know how to positively deal with setbacks, failure, and frustrations. This book is a wonderful tool for parents, educators, and coaches that want to empower children to practice resiliency, perseverance, and determination in their lives. Dr. Kate Lund writes from experience. She organizes skills into "7 pillars of resilience" that illustrate how we can aid children in building a solid support system for success. I appreciate the real life cases and individuals that she describes and her interviews with children for each pillar. I highly recommend this book.

Too general and obviuos. I was looking to get more specific guidelines to work on the general suggestions being made ..."Work with the child on emotional self-regulation and self-awareness skills." I was looking for specific approaches to help build coping skills and self regulation. Feels like she is out lining the obvious with little specific guidence.

This book breaks down the elements of helping your child cope successfully with the inevitable setbacks, fears and failures involved in learning a sport, in the classroom, and developing socially. I especially liked the section on extrinsic versus intrinsic motivation, and how to help children develop the latter. The author's examples from her own life, as well as other real-life examples, help to illustrate her points. As a psychologist myself, some of the material was familiar to me, but I still learned a lot. Well worth your time as a parent.

An excellent Resource for both Parents and Teachers
Reviewed in Australia on September 13, 2017Verified Purchase
This is an excellent book on child psychology, written in a practical and easy to follow format. I like the way the author has woven her own story into the book. The examples given illustrate each child’s challenges and how best to overcome them. This makes it an entertaining read, while at the same time, dispensing expert advice on how to deal with such challenges, and prepare children for well -adjusted adulthood.
This would be recommended reading for both teachers and parents, on how to deal with children with confidence, or other issues. I highly recommend it.
