We were introduced to a somewhat sheltered, snobby and beautiful girl who gets what she think she wants in life in Book 1. Turns out she just got a ticket to Intrigue Central and she's caught the eye of a lonely king with no heirs, and a sly crown prince almost immediately. To make everything worse it turns out she has magic in this seemingly magic-less world.
In Book 2 she realizes she needs to find out how to control it. So suddenly everyone wants to go with her, she manages to sneak out of the clutches of her government with their help and everyone still adores her. Suddenly the world is full of mythical creatures and magic she just never knew about because the rulers overthrew the original magical overlords and banned magic. Every "aha" moment is clumsily thrust into our faces like an afterthought. By the way there are elves. And monsters. Elemental magic. And by some stroke of fate she is the Chosen One who can use all elements and can actually save the world.
By the time we get through most of Book 2, three men are in love with her and her friends will follow her to the ends of the earth because they have nothing better to do and, did I mention everyone loves her?
I had a hard time liking the heroine because she doesn't deserve any of it. She never works for anything and is miraculously blessed with good fortune and friends to help her escape even the most dire of situations. She also has a problem with doing things alone. Less people to adore her, I suppose. Can't have that, can we?
She is the too good center of attention. Everyone loves her. The king is obsessed with her. The villain is an evil guy but he wants her too. She is saved by (yet another) handsome prince before the end. How many princes will this girl run into before we're through and can she make them all fall madly in love with her without lifting a finger?
I had a hard time liking the story at this point because it was so incredibly linear, with very little character development and relationships that were forced and barely held together by threads of choppy plot and prose.
What I think my biggest complaint is other than a sometimes wandering and loose plot, is that I thought this was a romance/action series. Instead there really is very little romance which disappointed me. Even when there is romance in the later books, it is significantly downplayed to the degree that you might miss it entirely if you skip ahead one or two sentences.
I am looking forward to reading the last book when it comes out this fall but I confess there were a number of times I had to put the books down and walk away because I just needed a break from the repetition of the Cyrene's thoughts. Suggestion to author is to ruthlessly edit story elements down so that inner character dialogue is used to introduce new thoughts and ideas rather than re-hash old thoughts and information over and over and over. And please turn up the romance. Puh-lease??
Here's the breakdown: I don't even know if I can sum this up articulately. So much happened in book 2. SO MUCH! Cyrene meets new travel companions, finds out magical creatures she thought were fairytales were actually real, finds the two people she longed to find, and possibly finds true love.
What I loved: The action and adventure were thrilling. I love the quest Cyrene embarks upon. She's brace and unwavering in her pursuit of answers. I loved her so much more in the installment. She really comes into her own. The character development is off the charts amazing.
The introduction of new threats and adversaries coupled with new allies! The new allies are particularly pleasant. Avoca is everything! The nature of her relationship with Cyrene is worth 5 stars alone. I loved everything about how their story has played out so far.
The romance isn't over the top, but really hit the spot. I have no idea who I want Cyrene to end up with.
The ending through me into a tailspin of epic proportions. I don't know where she goes from here. I'm heartbroken, so I know she is too.
I thought I had things figured out, but alas....I know nothing. LOL
If you love epic, thrilling, positively brilliant YA reads, AND WHO DOESN'T? You need to read this series!! It’s bloody brilliant!

I thought I loved "The Affiliate" .. A Lot!!! And then "The Bound" happened!!
This one is definitely better than the first book!!
There are like tons of things I can go on n on about!! But I think you should go into the book without any spoilers!! So, am not gonna reveal anything that happened!!
The Bound starts where TA left off!!! And the Prologue... I think that's one of the best prologues I have read in this genre... That's enough to keep you hooked to the book!!
Cyrene is out in search to discover her own abilities and learn to handle them!! Through this journey, we get to see many new characters!! The stories she heard back in her homeland, the myth ... everything seems to be reality !!
Everything she believed seems to be totally different from the truth!! When she thinks that she finally found out what she was set out for, things totally turn on a different direction!!
Her escape from Byern has lead to a whole lot of misinterpretations... With Edric's belief of Cyrene being kidnapped & trying to get her back with Kael working on it, the story unfolds with a whole set of new characters!! Its not just Cyrene, I loved every character the author has portrayed.. There is mystery to each character and that is one thing i loved most about the writing!!
This series is turning out to be one of Kyla's finest works!! I loved the world she has created in this series and the characters!! You can never ever predict any character... Coz the moment you think they are good or not... BOOM, the unexpected happens!!
The detailing is amazing.. and you can connect a lot of things with what happened in TA! And the descriptions of the world - just wow!!
And the Angst!!! It starts from the prologue!! And about the ending!! Creator .. Save Me!!
I cant wait for the next book in this series already!!
The story continues with Cyrene’s life while she’s trying to figure out what her powers are, how to use them, who to trust and how to survive on her journey for answers.
The Bound is even more thrilling and exciting than The Affiliate. It has so much more – friends, family, love, drama, intrigues and it has more magic. I loved how K.A. Linde made this world so much more mysterious. With all the characters, the new places, the magic – OHMYGOD THE MAGIC!!!! – and the adventures, I just fell in love with this story immediately.
Usually I tend to read fantasy books slower than other books because they are more complex and different to read then what I normally read. But they are so much more exciting and I love to treasure the experience of this new and magical world with its unique characters and places. That’s also why I’m totally in love with this series. It’s nothing like I’ve read before. It’s heartfelt and thrilling; everything happening in this book is unpredictable and keeps you on edge wanting to know more.
Sometimes I’ve had some difficulties connecting with some of the new characters because I wasn’t sure what to think of them. Are they good, bad? Were they just pretending because of Cyrene’s powers? So I was always suspicious of all the characters. But I’ve learned how to love and/or hate them. All characters were unique and intriguing, and I loved Cyrene. She’s sweet, innocent and unsure of herself, but she’s also strong and feisty; I just adored her.
I also loved the “flashbacks” in this book, as they give you more information about everything in this world – magic, history, the kingdom, love interests,… Just everything about this magical world has me intrigued and I’m really excited to read the next book in the series.
If you’ve read The Affiliate and The Bound the next book in the series will be an instant one-click.
The Bound is definitely another magnificent book by K.A. Linde.
