Dante's emotional coldness makes Val's life miserable, although she tries really hard to be a good wife to Dante. She knows the ways of the Mafia life since her father is in the Syndicate too but she still is stubborn and independent and finds ways to assert herself, even with all the restrictions this lifestyle places on women.
There are lots of unexpected twists and turns in the plot so it's not only a good romance novel, but it has a lot of action and mysterious intrigue as well. The sex scenes are steamy, but one of the most tender and heartfelt scenes is towards the end of the book, when Val asks Dante to make love to her and to "pretend that you love me". OMG!! I felt like crying, it reminded me of the Adele song "All I Ask".
Amazingly, this couple finally gets to their HEA. I like that they got to it while the characters still remained true to who they were. Dante was never going to be an openly demonstrative man when it came to expressing his love for Val, but he loved her in his own way.
Great series thus far but I really am looking forward to reading about the tumultuous relationship between Matteo, Luca's brother and Gianna, Aria's sister from the first book in the series, I bet it's sizzling!!
The last two chapters/epilogue did not make up for 20 characters of boring awfulness! My recommendation is that you skip this one (like I should’ve) and move on to Gianna’s story.
The main problem that I had with the story is that Dante never said that he loved her Val nor acted like it. Towards the middle to the end of the story he treated her better but it never felt like love, just lust and kindness. He never denied how much he loved and loves his deceased wife. I never want the heroine to come in second to OW, much less a poor second like Val did. She is the one who had to seduce him. He did not have sex with her on the wedding night nor did not seem to be in hurry to do so. When he agrees to have sex with her, he wants to have it in the dark and take her from behind. He continues to treat her like a polite stranger except during sex. She is the one who has to insist that he show her affections and speak to her outside of the bedroom. She is the one who told him how much she loved him. I found the whole thing sad, not romantic.

Dante Cavallaro is the Boss of the Chicago Outfit mafia, who lost his wife to cancer about 4 years ago. However, he was left without an heir and it is expected of him to remarry & have a son who can take over the mafia when he retires or dies. But Dante truly loved his first wife and hasn’t gotten over her death, but knows that he looks weak in the eyes of his men for not remarrying and is now willing to at least do that much. He has the choice of any woman he wants, but has to take his position into consideration of who would be an acceptable choice for the new head of the family.
Valentina is also a widow with no children. She was married to Antonio, her childhood friend, for years. But their marriage was a sham, a cover-up, a beard. Antonio was gay and if that had ever been found out, men in the mafia would have killed him for it. So Valentina agreed to marry him, in order to protect him. She had naively thought that perhaps they could make their relationship into a real one, that she could have kids, a marriage & a life with Antonio. But they never consummated their marriage; and when Antonio died she was still of a marriageable age. Although her virginity will raise questions with her new husband, secrets can’t hurt a dead man.
As the Boss, Dante truly had his choice of any woman to marry, because most all parents want their daughter to be married to the Boss, giving them an elevation of status within the mafia. Many people can’t figure why 36 year old Dante chose an older (24 year old!) widow, instead of an 18 year old virgin. Even Valentina isn’t sure why she was chosen, but she will do her duty & marry Dante.
Dante is known to be cold in all his business dealings and with the men under him in the mafia. Valentina hopes that he won’t be that way towards her and that she can finally have a true marriage with all the marital benefits. But she’s in for shock and confusion on her second wedding night that ends up being unconsummated, yet again. Valentina begins to think that it is something that is just wrong with her.
There were some grammatical errors, and then there were also errors with words. For example, a capo in the Italian mafia is a captain, not a boss. The boss is called boss or the Don. Also, in Italian, it’s famiglia because Spanish is familia.
