" What was meant as a sign of love and devotion for other couples was nothing but a testament of his ownership of me. A daily reminder of the golden cage I’d be trapped in for the rest of my life. Until death do us part wasn’t an empty promise as with so many other couples that entered the holy bond of marriage. There was no way out of this union for me. I was Luca’s until the bitter end. The last few words of the oath men swore when they were inducted into the mafia, could just as well have been the closing of my wedding vow: ‘I enter alive and I will leave dead.’"
Luca knew his duty. He knew what was expected of him and he knew he would do anything for his own honor and the familia. Being trained at such a young age for the position he knew would be his came with rules that were never broken. And the code of trusting very few. Never to show emotion. For that was weakness. Luca would never have weakness, or so he thought til one frightened woman was thrust upon him. One fearless yet timid beauty would change him forever.
" The path stretching before us was one of darkness, a life of blood and death and danger, a future of always watching my back, of knowing every day could be Luca’s last, of fearing that one day I might have to watch him receive a lethal injection. But this was my world and Luca was my man, and I would go this path with him until the bitter end."
An incredible rod into one mob family. Be prepared to cry, seethe, and your panties to soak. But every emotion is well worth the wait!!
“Did your father never teach you to hide your fear from monsters? They give chase if you run.”
Aria finds herself betrothed to a man at the age of fifteen. A man she fears, a man that is feared by most of the people around her. Her family is a huge part of the Mafia and deal of betrothal aren’t unheard of, in fact they bring mafia families together. She knows Luca doesn’t have a heart and wants nothing to do with him. When they marry, she makes it clear the only way that they will ever consummate the marriage is if he takes it against her will, so Luca decides he will wait. The problem is any advances he makes towards Aria are slapped away.
“Many women in our world are glad when their husbands use whores or take on a mistress. As you said, there are few love marriages. If a woman can’t stand her husband’s touch, she won’t mind him having affairs to satisfy his needs.”
So this is a slight spoiler alert, this happens like in the first quarter of the book, but I really felt I need to address this because I saw so many people say they DNFd this book because there was cheating. First, let me point out Aria tells Luca the only way he will ever be with her is if he pretty much Rapes her. He is a man who gets what he wants but he isn’t the man that will do that, especially to his wife. They are in an arranged marriage where neither one even likes the other. They are attracted to each other yes, but anything outside of that is just simply a marriage against their wills. Luca is a man with needs and he knows where to go to get it. He doesn’t go and cheat on Aria to hurt her nor does he do it because she isn’t good enough for him, he does it to alleviate Aria of the responsibility . Aria of course is hurt and feels betrayed but this was a huge turning point in their relationship. This was the first time they really discuss what they want from the other.
There are so many things that I loved about this story. Luca is a man who is cold, demanding and knows very little outside of blood shed. He’s impatient and rarely says a kind word. Aria is his opposite. When the monster that Luca is comes to the surface, Aria is his peace. She fears him but at the same time, she just wants to know the man even if it means squaring off with the parts of him she doesn’t like. Their relationship was a slow build, but I loved those parts of the book. I loved seeing Luca tested and seeing that he can be gentle and kind even when he didn’t realize he was doing those things. Luca, in turn shows Aria to let go, be wild and reckless. He shows her that no matter how hard she falls he’s there to catch her.
This story would not be what it is if the author had not written it exactly the way she did. There are many things in the book that really test the reader but if you are a reader like me, you know these parts are necessary to the character’s development. These two characters complimented each other beautifully. I cannot wait to dive in to the rest of this series!
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the first book in the Born into the Blood Mafia series and ends in an HEA.
>The story takes place in a violent world very few people can imagine – the mafia. I am sure lives like those portrayed in this story exist, but I could never imagine what living a mob life is actually like. Arranged marriages between rivals are the norm. Extreme violence amongst rivals is expected. Luca is heir to the NY mob and has arranged to marry Aria, of the Chicago mob, when she turns 18. Aria was sheltered her whole life and never allowed to date. The thought of marriage to someone so ruthless and powerful is frightening.
>The scene on her wedding night, with Luca vowing to her, is probably the most romantic thing I’ve read in a while. He shows his soft side with Aria, along with his extreme possession. Aria and her sisters were raised practically as nuns, yet Aria’s 2 younger sisters talk and dress so suggestively, their actions didn’t fit the story. Other than that issue, this is a wonderful, scary look into the life of a mob princess.
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving the book 5 stars.
Luca is what makes this book. He doesn't say much but his actions are what keep you invested. Sexy, and extremely possessive. Yet surprising tender, and considerate behind closed doors. Aria on the other hand is a bland heroine. Her only real character traits are being beautiful, blonde, and too innocent to be believed. She didn't annoy me, but didn't move me either.
This was a very enjoyable mafia romance.
