The 2000 reprinting has nearly 500 pages compared to the 1982 version's just over 200, nonetheless they contain pretty much identical information including the same highly useful charts. The 1982 version seems more concise, comparing equivalent sections and passages the early printing appears in most cases to convey the same essential information with fewer words. As the author himself (Thanks for writing these Shane Smith!) commented The Greenhouse Gardener's Companion indeed has significantly more information about ornamental plants whereas the original concentrates mostly on food plants. The 1982 version devotes an entire page to marijuana cultivation where the 2000 printing completely omits this information, illustrative of the differences in overall vibe between the two. No doubt the contact information for seed suppliers and whatnot is more up-to-date in the new version, but the internet makes this less of a critical difference.
So, if you hope to approach solar greenhouses from a permaculture - 100% natural / passive - off-grid - food self-sufficiency type direction you may find the original printing more specifically relevant to your needs without all the extra stuff you don't care about anyways. The reprinting will definitely serve suburban hobbyists and ornamental plant growers better. I actually prefer the more direct / concise way the information is presented in the original version. As anyone can see it also has a way cooler cover :)
But whichever edition you choose you'll no doubt feel inspired by all the useful information these books contain. I expect to refer to it often as I build and enjoy my own little piece of bountiful solar paradise.
