If the looks, build quality, and elegance are part of the appeal for you, you may enjoy these. That's definitely part of what you are paying for. They felt good on my ears, but they fell off my head a little too easily. Sennheiser 598 headphones sound better for about the same money. The Senns may not look as good for wearing out and about, but they do stay on your head a little better. Also, they are an open design, and these are sealed-pad headphones. Sound-wise, these have some dazzle and detail - guitar strings sound lovely - but they sound a bit muffled and chesty in the vocals. The 598s just sound clearer. Another alternative - Noontech Zoro II headphones sound nearly as good as these for less than half the money, but they also feel quite flimsy and they definitely don't look as sharp.

I rarely review anything, but I felt the need to do so in this case based on my profound disappointment.

Firstly let me say that I've owned a pair of B&W P5 headphones since 2011, and I LOVE them. I own various pairs of high-end headphones, and for consumer listening - music, movies etc. - these are my absolute favorite.

However, all good things have a life span, and my P5s have become a bit worn out, although still fully functional.

So I decided to buy a new pair, and found the "recertified" version on Amazon and figured saving a few bucks for essentially the same product was a win-win.

Totally wrong.

I'd read an answered question that stated the recertified P5s came with the carrying case and both accessory cables. Nope. Instead of the swanky packaging that the brand-new product comes in, the recerts arrived in a cardboard box, no manual, no warrantee info, no case.

This on its own would not have been a deal-breaker, since I already had the case and additional iPhone accessory cable, but I was a little disappointed.

I inspected the product and discovered the leather had marks and damage, and was not in particularly good condition. Also not the end of the world, but for $200...

I plugged the recerts into my iphone and pulled up a piece of music I am intimately familiar with and checked out the audio quality. The phones sounded tinny and harsh, nothing like the P5s I'd known and loved for all those years. I demoed a few other diverse pieces of music, from bassy hiphop and dance all the way to acoustic and classical, and A-B'd the recerts with my original P5s. They sound completely different, and terrible, while my P5s sound great as always, even with worn out ear pads.

Wondering if B&W had completely changed their product, I proceeded immediately to Best Buy and checked out the B&W listening station. The phones there sounded awesome, just as I was used to experiencing with my P5s. So I just bought a brand new pair there, filed a return ticket, and am now writing this review.

The B&W P5s are amazing headphones. But do yourself a favor and buy the brand-new ones at full price. They are worth the money. If I hadn't been familiar with the product already, I'd have just thought they weren't very good, which is a shame.

Hey B&W - please stop selling these garbage recertified phones! You are doing your loyal customers a disservice. We can tell the difference! And any new consumer buying these will immediately regret their decision.

Beware of fake versions!

Beware of resellers selling a fake version of these headphones. This happened to me. I did not purchase these directly from Amazon. I used the "more buying choices" to obtain a cheaper price and when they arrived I noticed a difference from an authentic version that I purchase from the Apple Store. The fake seemed very authentic and I could see this fooling a good number of people. Amazon quickly ratified the situation and refund me in about a week. Amazon's A-Z policies covers you in a situation like this.

The authentic version that I purchased sounded excellent and the build quality was one of the best I have ever seen on a headphone. These headphones require a very lengthy "burn in". I read some where that it is close to 200 hours. I can attest that these sound very different then from when they were first used.

I ended up returning these to the apple store and opting for the V-Moda M-100. I loved this headphones and would definitely recommend them. The V-Moda's just sounded better for the genre of music that I mostly listen to, which being Electronic and EDM. The P5 sounded great for all types of music but really excelled at vocals and string instruments. For artists such Michael Buble and Lana Del Ray the P5s were noticeably better. I would consider the P5 a versatile headphone that will appeal to many different types of listeners, while the V-Moda will appease the bass-heads. The P5 is a great headphone and you could not go wrong with it. I would suggest buying them from a store that has a generous return policy and giving them a lengthy audition.

Sound: Phenomenal, outstanding, incredible - it's like a concert (no joke - this isn't just their good marketing) for one. The sounds are all crisp and beautiful. I've had a couple of my albums that I ripped from CDs don't don't sound as nice, but after a few adjustments, the balance came out perfect.

Construction: Solid and sturdy. I've gone through dozens of headphones on my commute to and from work, and these will no doubt stand up to the beating they are going to take. What I appreciate most of the connection to the headphones is inside the cup - eliminating any chance that these will go to crap because of a bad connection. If the wire ever breaks, you can just buy a new wire and replace it. No new $300 fee - just a wire.

Comfort: I was a little skeptical of these not having any kind of cup to cradle the ear and was convinced that if these were going to stay on my head, they were going to pinch. But this isn't the case. In fact, after a few minutes, I hardly noticed that I was wearing them. The leather pads are incredibly soft and the top pad is extremely supportive and comfortable.

These beat the hell out of Dre Beats, Shure, and Bose headphones everyday of the week. Don't waste your money on the name brands you know and spend millions in marketing. These are far and away the best headphones for the money

You're going to do it anyway, then you're going to buy the P3s for outdoor stuff. But the p5s ooze quality ( and I hate to say it, style) they fit beautifully. Sound awesome and the depth and spread you get when you add a dragonfly is astounding.,
I now take my sennys hd25s to work these stay at home.
Whether the sound source these things just work.

Heres what i wanted - headphones that didn't colour music. If it produced to have subtle bass, then it shouldnt be forced into heavy low ranges.

What I got, was just the purest audio ive ever heard from headphones. Capable of punching bass when the track demands - hip hop. Now i thought id try listening to Bach to check the instrumental clarity. The multi instrumental levels are fantastically seperated. The depth of these are fantastic.

They are not biased to one kind of musical genre. Thats the beauty, they wont colour your music making these the ultimate headphones youll ever own.

My experience of headphones didn't stretch much beyond those that come with an iPhone so I didn't really know where to start. I had just started studying again and with kids in the house wanted to make sure that the headphones I bought would smooth out most of the background noise without doing the total noise cancelling offered by powered devices as well as allow me to better appreciate my extremely varied music collection.

Having read some reviews I went for the P5 and they have exceeded all my expectations. The audio is rich and crystal clear - helping me to appreciate some of my music collection all over again. The build quality is exceptional - it's like getting into an Aston Martin (....I'd imagine) - soft leather on the ears means I have worked for a whole day when writing without any discomfort. They are light but feel very well made and have stood up to my kids using them.

A very well made product from a home grown company. Delighted.

Have been a Bose fan for a while and have also tried the Dr Beats (horrible) . I've been an amazon customer for years and this is my first review. Headphones are a very personal thing but if you are looking for cans that you will be using for years to come then test drive these babies. I first saw these on a friend of mine. I had the perfect test drive, noisy pub on a Thursday evening in the city. When I put them on it was like I stepped into my own private box. The depth of sound is amazing and the build quality is excellent.. I was also impressed with the fit and size (I have a big head :-)). After buying them, I wore the P5's on a long trip and they are extremely comfortable and they are less bulky than the Bose quiet comfort 15's. The P5's are noise isolating rather than cancelling and the design and fit means they really perform. I'm glad I don't have to scramble for a battery when they stop working as they are not powered.. I also love the fact that "the cable" that causes me to generally bin my headphones can be replaced from the B &W website. You get a spare (without mic and controls) but it looks very easy and cheap to replace the one thing that always kills my headphone experience. The P5's are not cheap but first impressions tell me it will be worth it for the long term. These cans really do perform. Bravo B&W.....

I chose these headphones because I wanted good quality but also something that could be easily carried around, I was not disappointed.As soon as I took them out of the box, held them in my hands, smelt the leather I knew I had made the right choice!!
The build and sound quality really are very, very good.I had read that they were not the most comfortable on the market but I can honestly say I have not found that to be the case.these really are worth the money.
