The first Zeppelin changed the game for speaker dock sound quality and design. Zeppelin Air raised the bar again with the addition of Airplay. Now we've taken our biggest leap forward yet. Using scientific advances and the latest analytical techniques, we've been able to improve almost every element of the system, introducing technologies never seen before in any speaker in its class, including Spotify Connect, Bluetooth aptX and Air Play. The result isn't just a new Zeppelin. It's a whole new standard for sound quality in wireless home audio.
Top customer reviews
The product arrive very well packaged. When I removed it from the box, I was surprised at the weight. It is heavy considering the size. B & W packed every inch of the enclosure with either technology or lead, haha.
Set-up was pretty easy. Download the CONTROL application to your phone or computer. Turn on the Zeppelin, turn on the CONTROL app. Follow the instructions in the app. The only trouble I had was that my computer (Macbook Air OS X 10.10.5) kept trying to connect to the Zeppelin Wireless network, which made it impossible to run the CONTROL app set-up procedure. So I ran CONTROL from my iPhone, and it worked. The Zeppelin immediately demanded a firmware update, which was easy to do. After the firmware update the Zeppelin worked perfectly with my Macbook Air computer as well.
I've only ever used the Airplay and Aux IN. Both of these options work perfectly. Airplay sounds very good. I've not experienced any drop outs, or had any trouble running it. The Aux IN sounds very good as well and selection between Airplay and Aux IN could not be easier. The Zeppelin automatically selects the latest audio stream source. So if you start playing a record, it uses the Aux IN. If you start playing a track from iTunes over Airplay, it switches to Airplay. That is fantastic!
The sound is clean and crispy with a very tight controlled low end. In fact I would describe the low end as being very melodic. Ideally I'd have another octave worth of low end, but in a speaker this size, I doubt that is possible. The mid range is very detailed and yet pleasing. The high end is clean and detailed, but because this is a single speaker system, you will not get the expansive airy sound you would get from a well designed two speaker system. Even at high volumes the sound is very good. I was not able to bring the system to distortion even at volume levels that were uncomfortable in my small room. Reviewers state that the Zeppelin has the widest stereo image of any single speaker system available. If that is true, I don't think I could live with any other. I find the stereo image to be pretty narrow on this speaker. In my small room, it works well. But in a larger listening space, I would probably want a two speaker system in hopes of creating a better stereo image.
I'd recommend this speaker for anybody looking for a good sounding single speaker system. It looks great and works great. Takes up very little room physically, but fills a room with music.
Having said that, the sound is fantastic, the design stylish, and the setup easy.
I subtracted one star for some wifi issues. When settting it up, it did not detect my 2.4Ghz network. So I connected it to the 5GHz network. This ended up giving some connectivity issues, with sound hiccups and sometimes a seemingly hung speaker, requiring a reset. Looking at the configuration, the signal strength was a little low. Odd, since no other devices had bad 5GHz signal in that spot in the house. Perhaps the speaker's internal antenna isn't that great. Fortunately, even though the setup does not find 2.4Ghz networks, explicitly specifying the name and password of a 2.4Ghz network does work. After I did that, the connectivity issues disappeared, and it has been working great with AirPlay.
Now on to the sound. I am somewhat of an audiophile. I don't expect this unit to compete with my Magneplanars, vacuum tube DAC and monoblock amps and well it didn't. I must admit, however, that when breaking the unit in before we left sometimes I would walk in the living room where my other half would be playing music and did have to pause for a second to get my bearings and realize the sound was coming from the B&W.
The B&W sound is very restrained, well behaved, super-articulate and carries a really nice extended bass. You hear all the detail in your music and there is a three dimensional nature to the sound that is more attributable to the punch of precise sound backed by a solid bass rather than stereo imaging. Imaging is present to some degree but I don't sense that it is enhanced by digital trickery as is is the case with some speakers. To me that is a good thing. I want to hear the music not the speaker. Still this very honest and transparent presentation means that this unit still sounds like the size that it is which is small. It will fill a room, no problem, but you will always sense that that sound emanates from the speaker.
Some folks have commented that the midrange could be more 'authoritative'. Yes that is probably true but this unit sounds good a wide variety of music and if you tried to put too much in the mid-range it would sound out of kilter without the rest of the depth of presentation that one would expect from rich forward midrange. That is just not possible with such small speakers, close together. I would say the midrange is 'authentic'. In fact the best way to describe the whole sound is authentic, realistic, musical and easy to listen to. I also have to admit that from an aesthetics point of view it is pretty darn fine looking.
You won't go wrong with this unit if you don't begrudge the price. Were it not for the price five stars would not be enough.
