Book One: Tell Me When I'm Dead Title of Review: Very Nearly as Good as Stephen King
I found this book mentioned "for free" on Twitter, where so many authors are promoting their books that I've become more and more discerning. The deciding factor about investing the time in reading it was the number of 5-star reviews, and the highly complimentary content of those reviews. Even the single one-star review seemed to be a mistake, because the reviewer raved about the book. In fact, the reviews so great that I had to wonder about their veracity, but after reading the book, I no longer doubt that. I was hooked from the first page, and the story line, action and character development kept me reading.
I was taken with how well written and error free it was, which I appreciate more and more in this era of self-publishing. It is gruesome in parts (there are cannibalistic zombies, after all) but not so much so that you had to look away. That's a fine line that authors like Stephen King can walk, and I am not being flip when I say this is nearly as good a book as King would write...and I am a big-time King fan. Looking forward to the next two books in the series! Highly recommended.
Book Two: Dead Is All You Get Title of Review: Sensational Sequel
I read the first book in this series, "Tell Me When I'm Dead" and was enthralled with the author's storytelling ability and writing style. Virtually flawless, and the fact that I'm no fan of zombie books but couldn't put it down was a clear indicator that this is a special book and series. Book two was as good as book one. The author is a great writer, and though I recognized that in the first book, it became even more evident in the second. His dialogue and pacing is purely professional, engaging and sharp. Tight writing and not a wasted word in propelling the story forward.
In "Dead Is All You Get," the aftermath of the initial carnage in book one turns into a coming together of a smart, tough and dedicated group who is trying to navigate ever-changing dark political forces and the deadly-but-still-mutating non-dead, as they try to determine the reason for the experiment that decimated their lives, and who is behind it. More, they want to eradicate the forces that have brought this plague upon their home town, and they find themselves in perilous situations time and again. These are realistic heroes whose dangerous escapades leave your breathless and keep you turning the pages.
I am looking forward to reading book three, because the author has me fully invested in the characters, their causes, their actions, their futures-- and he has led me there as beautifully as any author possibly could! Beautiful writing, flawless editing, compelling story.
