I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because it does work. Just barely. As in, when you get it out of the bag, and plug it in, power flows through to your appliance/electronic gadget. That much it does.
But just a month into its very gently-treated lifespan, it started to fall apart. I was worried that the construction looked flimsy and that the prongs might separate from the plastic body. Friend, that turned out to not be the problem. Instead, the plastic body started to fall apart all by itself! With no rough treatment, pieces of the plastic just started falling off, exposing the metal prongs and adapter within.
"Meh," said I. "I paid $5 for a pair of these things, what do you expect?"
So I put a piece of duct tape on the hole (later holes) and soldiered on, it still got power to my device and I wasn't shocking myself when I touched it. All was ... well, not good, but not the end of the world either.
But then the whole thing came apart. The body just separated from the metal inside and though I can fold it back together it barely works now and flickers in and out. This is like, three months of owning it, unplugging and plugging it gently once a day or so. Reader, I have to say, I am a cheap dude, but this is ridiculous. I don't have the perfect alternative for you, but if I were you, I'd look elsewhere. Maybe be prepared to spend a couple of extra bucks, I don't know. I just wouldn't buy this plug adapter.
If you want to be well prepared on power, I recommend this combination:
- At least 2 of these "BoxWave US/ EU to AU/NZ Plug Adapter – Plug outlet adapter from America or Europe to Australia and New Zealand" items - To plug into hard-to-reach physical sockets.
- At least 1 of "Australia China Power Plug Adapter, TESSAN 5 in 1 New Zealand Travel Power Adapter with 3 US Outlets and 2 USB Charging Ports, US to Australia New Zealand Fiji Argentina Plug Adapter (Type I)" - To give you several physical sockets and a couple USB ports
- At least 1 of "Pac2Go Universal Travel Adapter with Quad USB Charger - All-in-One Surge/Spike Protected Electrical Plug with Fast Charging USB Ports, International Power Socket works in 192 Countries - 4XUSB" - To give you at least 1 electric power converter with high wattage for iron, blow-dryer, etc., and 4 USB ports.
The adapter is not very big, so it is easy to use with a wall jack or an extension cord because nothing sticks out very far.
On the other hand, it's quality is no better than it has to be, and the two American prongs are simple plated metal. I would not expect it to last forever if you keep attaching it and pulling it off, or you keep plugging it in and out of the wall. In other words, I cannot speak to it's travel-worthiness. Perhaps you should buy two, just in case. But if you just need a one-time adapter, it will do just fine.
A word about prices. I do not understand why a European-to-American adapter costs twice as much as an American-to-European adapter, as it is essentially the same thing going in the other direction. But there you are.
By the way, Radio Shack sells the same kind of adapter for $11 at the store and $11 plus postage on-line. Go figure!
KRIGER Universal power strip AC 110-220-240V surge protector for computer, printers, 6 universal AC outlets KR136
It's a KRIGER Universal power strip and works quite well. You can purchase it on Amazon.
The universal power strip has a European plug so the Boxwave allows me to simply plug the power strip into it so that I can use it in the USA as well as in foreign countries.
It's a simple and inexpensive solution.
