I saw this movie when it first came out. Barbara Hersey debut I believe. Yes, it's fiction but in reality, it's a story of the Great Depression, unions, corporate greed, and racism in America. Acting by David Carradine, Barry Primus, Bernie Casey, and Barbara Hersey was above average. The trains and blues music added to this flick. If you have the chance, watch it soon because it's leaving Amazon shortly.

I love Barbara Hershey and was totally unaware of this movie. I like David Carradine, but Hershey was the candy that brought me here. I loved the 30s costumes, the scenery, and I especially loved the soundtrack being an acoustic blues fan. It was a bit of a Bonny and Clyde theme, except that they weren't so totally irresponsible and evil. Carradine's character was part of the labor movement, and "Bertha" just got caught up in the downhill slide to save him. The social message was subdued - yes it was a bit more sympathetic to the liberal side - the union guys were "commies" and the anti union guys were gun toting, racist, evil thugs. But I felt the movie only used the political turmoil of the time to create a great context for the story of this band of characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it.

Boxcar Bertha is famous because it was the second movie Martin Scorsese directed. It was produced by Roger Corman for American International. It followers Barbara Hershey as Bertha who travels across Depression Era America. She runs into union organizers, gamblers, hustlers, the police, racists, and more. It’s like an adventure through 1930s America with some social justice thrown in as Hershey’s boyfriend David Carradine fights the railroad. Scorsese even makes a cameo as a customer at a prostitution house. He also tries some film techniques like a long dark hallway to show that the characters are trapped and an exaggerated shooting scene. It’s not a class like Scorsese’s other movies but it’s good.

This is an unusual film, at least for today. It is in the Bonny&Clyde tradition and follows the same premise back then. Due to the hard times, a small band of 'have-nots' go on a crime spree including robbing railroad trains. Unlike the over-the-top violence of Bonny and Clyde, the drama in this film is socio-economic. Barbara Hersey plays a sultry brunette who helps herself to the baubles of the wealth(ier) people that they hold up. The film makes great play of the 'transfer' of wealth, during the hold-up, of said jewels from someone who doesn't need them to Barbara Hersey, someone who has no idea how to wear them. The scene is intended to be a microcosm of the hard times and it works, in an odd way.

The 'two sides' are illustrated here; the small band of outlaws and robbers (with the Barbara Hersey character and her boyfriend) versus the law. The railroad had security forces that also dealt with them, in a rather brutal way.

This is not a particularly racy film, more an historical drama...The TV versions that play occasionally have several scenes cut out and don't really reflect the overall film released at all.

For yet another view of the hard times of the Depression era(1930-40) or any Depression for that matter, this is a good choice.

Set in the Great Depression, this move shows, if somewhat romanticized, life of the southern railroad unionizer and an young orphan girl who fall in love. And how the unionizer and the girl, along with two other cronies turn to petty crime to survive. The climatic ending must be seen to be believed. Also if you are interested in steam era railroading, there are plenty of steam locomotive and train scenes to satisfy you. Not to mention the 24 year old Barbara Hershey is hot.

The genre "proletarian requiem" was never really Scorsese territory - (Martin Ritt owned that). Still you can see some experiments here: his use of Barbara Hershey starts to find her unique combination of sexuality, intelligence, potential for danger and latent self-destructiveness; a crucifixion scene hints at the religious passions instilled in the director by his upbringing. Not a great movie but very interesting if you're a student of film-maker careers - which I am.
