Boxitects Hardcover – Picture Book, January 14, 2020
A STEAM-centered, adorably illustrated picture book about Meg, a brilliant and creative boxitect who creates extraordinary things out of ordinary cardboard boxes.
Meg is a brilliant and creative boxitect. She loves impressing her teacher and classmates with what she makes out of boxes.
But there’s a new kid at Maker School: Simone. Simone is good at everything, and worst of all, she’s a boxitect too.
When the annual Maker Match is held, Meg and Simone are paired as a team but can’t seem to stop arguing. When their extraordinary project turns into a huge disaster, they must find a way to join creative forces, lift each other up, and work together.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseDo you have a child who loves to tinker, create, and build? Or, are you looking for ways to inspire your children to upcycle all the boxes from online purchases from the last few months? Either way, you're going to want to check out Boxitects by Kim Smith for your builders or builders-to-be, as it's fully of both creative and teamwork inspiration!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Meet Meg, a "boxitect." Yes, that's right, a boxitect, as in one who loves "to make things out of boxes." In fact, she loves her cardboard creations so mucht hat her mom enrolls her in Maker School, where she'll create with makers of all kinds. As the only boxitect in her class, she feels pretty darn special and learns to build useful, strong, and beautiful structures... Until Simone, another boxitect, shows up. From the first moment in class together, Meg and Simone feel a strong rivarly, pointing out flaws in each other's creations. Then comes the Maker Match, a competition to build the most amazing thing with only one rule -- you had to work with your team of like-minded builders, so Meg and Simone are forced to work together. Will they be able to cooperate enough to have a structure for the contest? You'll have to wait and see!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Y'all, Boxitects has just about everything one might hope for! From the diverse characters, to girls in STEM, to creative inspiration out the wazoo, to important teamwork and collaboration messages, to the bright and inviting illustrations, you are going to love this book. And, to add to that list, be sure to check out the end matter, as Smith also includes terrific information about cardboard, boxitects, and building your own Boxitect Castle!

In this book Meg is a young girl who loves to build with boxes but she likes to build alone. She meets Simone and they have to try and work together. We think this book is great because it teaches you how to work together and not give up. Another reason is the pictures are colorful and full of fun details. If you like the book Not a Box you will love Boxitects because they both are about using your imaginations. This book is great for any kid or adult who love to create things out of boxes. - Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseDo yourself a favor and buy this book. I was originally drawn to it when I was looking for books with diverse characters. This book has NOTHING to do with diverse characters, but rather the characters in the illustrations just happen to be diverse (I love the normalcy of this).
When this book arrived, we read it over and over and over again. The little girl in the book is an engineer who builds things out of cardboard and she is the best until another "boxitech" comes around. The story ends with a moral in teamwork followed by directions to create two different engineering projects of your own using boxes. We have been collecting boxes for months now to build a fort made of boxes and my son is beyond excited.
We have gifted this book 5 times since buying it and EVERY SINGLE TIME the recipient loves it.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis charming story about two children in Maker school is a family favorite. After checking out from the library multiple times, finally decided to add to our collection. The story is very good and so are the illustrations.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book has a great message about creativity, teamwork, and friendship. I love that it features a wide variety of ways that kids can express their creativity and imaginations. As a bonus, the author has included some boxitect challenges in the back of the book along with information about why cardboard is a great material to work with. This would be a fantastic addition to your classroom library and a great mentor text for a STEM classroom!

LilzillaReviewed in Canada on July 25, 20205.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
My two girls really loved this book. They loved how the main characters built these really cool and intricate cardboard sculptures. As a parent I enjoyed certain points through the story: the two main characters/best builders are girls, the girls are encouraged and championed during their competition, the kids are able to problem solve and work together in the end. Overall a lot of good messages in the story, with beautiful illustrations throughout.

Our family loves Kim Smith! We got this book for our 4 and 8 year old daughters - their current favorites were Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Home Alone. Boxitects instantly became a new favourite in our home. It's a fun story with a great message and the illustrations are fantastic!

My kids LOVED this book. It inspired so much creative with Amazon boxes 🤣. I love that the author didn't completely wrap up the story in a nice little bow.
Appreciated the diversity in the book.
