Review

A riveting tale of determination, overcoming challenges and, ultimately, finding inner joy. A must-read for anyone who wants to be inspired to live their dreams. You won't be able to put it down.

Greg Hicks, Bestselling Co-Author of How We Choose to Be Happy

What a delightful read. Larry Jacobson's lively prose and vivid descriptions manage to convey not only his sailing story and the amazing adventures of his circumnavigation but also lets us into his heart in a way that few writers achieve. The account of his inner journey, while he learned to overcome his doubts and achieve "life lived to the fullest," is truly inspiring. Even if I had never sailed on a boat in my life, I would still have found it difficult to put down this charming memoir.

Nancy Knudsen, Cruising Editor, Sail-World

Larry Jacobson has lived life on the edge and, as a result, made his dreams come true. In this amazing, riveting book, he shares his great adventure sailing around the world. Every page I felt his fears and the storms and was right there with him on that boat. This book is about honesty, fearlessness, and having the courage to make your dreams come true

 David Mixner, Bestselling Author

As a seven-year-old boy, Larry Jacobson often stood outside the gates of the marina near his home in Oakland, California, staring at the sleek sailing yachts nestled in their births, and dreamed of sailing the seven seas. His fantasy, even at that young age, was to circumnavigate the world. That aspiration remained dormant, wrapped in a cocoon for over forty years, waiting, waiting, but always pressing on his heart. The Boy Behind the Gate is the nonfiction account of the author fulfilling his life long dream.

This is not simply a sailing story of shimmering white-sand beaches, tropical lagoons, and exotic ports of call. It is the hard and gritty sea tale of overcoming fears and insecurities, of dealing with the harsh and glorious displays of nature, of facing loneliness. This is a story of a gay man who risked everything for uncertainty and adventure, and in the process, reinvented himself. It is an account of personal strength and perseverance.

On December 7th, 2001, Larry Jacobson walked away from a successful career and a long-time lover. He, his first mate, Ken, and a skeleton crew boarded a fifty-foot sailing yacht, Julia, stowed their provisions, made last minute preparations, waved good bye to friends and family, sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge, and pointed the bow south. They would not see that beautiful orange span again for another six years.

Jacobson had never captained an ocean going vessel before leaving the safety of the west coast of Mexico to cross the Pacific. He was not prepared for what lay ahead, but the unrelenting ocean served as teacher and guide, humbling his ego one minute, inspiring him the next.

This is a great book. It follows a man fulfilling his dream of sailing around the world. I have read numerous books on sailing, multiple survival at sea books, and found this one to be the most fun and inspirational. I didn't realize he was gay when I bought the book, and being a bit of the macho type it was a challenge for me at first but the more I read the less I cared, and found it easy to jump over any parts that made me uncomfortable. Which there really weren't many, he doesn't get into details. Thank you Larry. The adventure here is amazing though. Larry literally takes you around with world with him following his log entries and added bits of hindsight. I have almost finished it in 2 days, which is big for me. My wife and I are planning to do exactly as he has done, but avoiding the full circumference to stay away from Middle Eastern and African hostilities. However after reading this I may have to reconsider. Each chapter begins with a quote, which most of which I have been writing down and saving. I feel like a friend of Larry's and have thoroughly enjoyed his story. He has discovered the true meaning of life in his quest, and found a way to share it. I'm a very low stress/no stress kind of person, if I don't like something I change it, if I can't change it then there's no sense in worrying about it. Larry discovers this and truly lives it. I hope more people do the same as result of this book. Enjoy, highly recommended.

I have known Larry Jacobson for many years and always knew that he had boundless energy, spirit and integrity, but I did not know until he sailed away that he also had prodigious skills in writing. His emails during the voyage were so lyrical, expressive, and evocative that I joined others in encouraging him to write this book. His powers of description, his passion, his perseverance, his loyalty, and his indomitable courage are inspirational. I got the premium edition which includes a video of his travels and what struck me the most was his joy of living. Every frame includes Larry happy about being alive and being in the moment. The book is both personal and universal. As a long-time fan of Larry and as a reader, I highly recommend it as a metaphor for life and as a wonderful read on so many levels. Please do yourself a favor and read it.

I was on the dock the day Julia arrived home in Emeryville...a flag adorned sailboat with the rainbow leading the way...and I'd been looking forward to reading this book since they got home! I've often heard the description of cruising as "sailing to exotic places to fix your boat" - and there's not much in Larry's stories that would appear to argue with that, but there's so much more!

Having met Larry & Ken on one of their brief returns to the Bay Area during their trip and having another friend who had started with them on their journey, their story and adventure had already captured my admiration and attention. I was on his email list during part of their travels and had heard Larry speak before with a great slideshow of pictures of their adventures, but as a sailor I was quite eager read his detailed stories about the entire trip...and I wasn't disappointed! Larry is a wonderful storyteller.

With the insight of his personal journal entries along with the emails he had shared with friends, the reader gets to be in the middle of the challenge and satisfaction of fulfilling a dream while learning to love, live and appreciate life's moments - be those silent and beautiful or in raging seas and howling winds!

Whatever your dream, with this book, Larry encourages you to go live it.
