The Boy with Big, Big Feelings (The Big, Big Series, 1) Hardcover – Picture Book, August 20, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
An instant classic in the world of Social-Emotional Learning, this bestselling picture book tells the story of one little boy with some big, big emotions -- and how he learns to see them for the gifts they are.
The Boy with Big, Big Feelings is relatable for any child -- especially for a child experiencing anxiety, extreme emotions, a child identified as a Highly Sensitive Person, or a child on the autism spectrum. Beautifully illustrated and written in rhyming verse, children and adults explore the whole spectrum of feelings and readers navigate the emotional challenges they face throughout the day.
The main character has feelings so big that they glow from his cheeks, spill out of his eyes, and jump up and down on his chest. When he hears a joke, he bursts with joy. When a loud truck drives by, he cries. When his loved ones are having a hard day, he feels their emotions as if they were his own.
The boy tries to cope by stuffing down his feelings, but with a little help and artistic inspiration, the boy realizes his feelings are something to be celebrated.
The Big, Big series inspires kids to embrace whatever it is inside them that makes them unique--whether it's big feelings, big ideas, or big questions. Full of creativity and tenderness, each book in the series offers readers connection and companionship as they navigate the challenges of growing up.

Review
"With creativity and tenderness, Britney Winn Lee and Jacob Souva invite children and adults alike to understand the value of our emotions and why they aren't a hindrance but instead a part of what allows us to experience life with resilience and connection." --Aundi Kolber, Author, Speaker, and Trauma-Informed Therapist
"The Boy with Big, Big Feelings is a story that's big enough for all of us to feel seen. Winn Lee's rhythmic text saves space for the sensitive kids whose emotions rest just beneath the skin. And in welcoming us into those quiet and confusing emotional places, the story offers connection and companionship, reminding us that 'big emotions affect ALL of us!'" --Matthew C. Winner, School Librarian and host of The Children's Book Podcast

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024As a mother of children with sensitive emotions, I absolutely love this book. This is one of the best books of the ones I’ve recently purchased. I was looking for one more about controlling emotions but this book had a tear in my eye. It’s beautifully written and I wish it was around when my older two children were young like my third. I definitely recommend this book to any parent with a sensitive child.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023My nephew loved it so much that I took it to his class on a family reading day. The artwork was different but once explained to the children they got the emotions tied to it. The feelings described by the main character were relatable to all the children & it opened a floodgate of emotions that they wanted to share. Would probably be a game changer for a toddler with repressed feelings or for one that just lives to share.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024I bought this to read to my 3 and 5 year old, but wish I had this book when my oldest was younger! Great book and my kids definitely related to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2021Britney has done such a wonderful job with this book. She has really captured what it is like to experience emotions. To have a big heart and big emotions and that those are OKAY.
The fact that she is writing from the perspective of a young boy is not to be missed. In a society that tells our young boys not to feel emotions, Britney wades in with a delicate boldness.
My five-year-old experiences life with a speech delay and many sensory needs. This book continues to open the doors of communication with him.
There is much representation in Britney's books and this one is no different. There is comfort in feeling seen - knowing you're not the only one with big emotions.
A gem for any home library or teacher's socio-emotional toolkit!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2020This book is FABULOUS. As a mama of a kiddo with big feelings and some anxiety, as well as sensory processing disorder, this book hit home better than anything I’ve seen before. The illustrations are so simple and sweet, I love the cadence of the words and rhyming but most importantly, the message the book conveys is spot on. This book addresses what it’s like to have emotions of all kinds and how they sometimes show up physically in your body. The little boy takes on other people’s emotions and even holds onto all the beautiful emotions and thoughts/images “for hours”. He feels so different and alone until he sees a little girl just like him with her big emotions and together they see everyone feels them.
This is a must have for every child’s book shelf. This is one to read often and help open the dialogue of your child’s feelings. I will recommend this to anyone and everyone!

Met mijn 2-jarige kleinzoon vertel ik gewoon wat we zien op de prentjes. Of ik vraag wat hij ziet. Het voorleesverhaal vind ik nog te moeilijk, maar dat komt nog wel.
