About the Author

Thomas Locker was one of the major American painters of the past century. In a career that spanned almost 60 years, he had over 75 solo exhibitions. In 1982, he began work on his first children’s picture book, Where the River Begins. Mr. Locker’s exceptional paintings and illustrations grace the pages of some 30 different books, several of which he also wrote. These unique books have been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Christopher Award, the John Burroughs Award, and the New York Times Award for best illustration.


Lenny Hort is the author of several acclaimed books for children, including The Boy Who Held Back the Sea. Mr. Hort lives in New Jersey with his wife and their three daughters.

Beautiful illustrations - Hoped for a better story
Though I really love Thomas Locker's beautiful oil painting illustrations, I did not care for this retelling of the classic tale.A child who has misbehaved is told the story of a naughty boy's day of mischief, who, when he tried to warn the townspeople of impending disaster, was only believed by a man of low repute, to no avail. In the end, the boy has a change of heart and declines an outing, instead he reads to an elderly man he neglected earlier. This is somewhat of a cautionary tale with a happy ending.I would rather give our children the example of an honest child's day of doing well, rather than a bad child's day filled with misbehavior and finally doing right.I found a video reading of this book -- google 'The Boy Who Held Back the Sea - Story Time with Mama Ezra'..........Another reviewer recommended this good book: The Hole in the Dike by Norma B. Green https://www.amazon.com/hole-dike-Norma-B-Green/dp/B0006X07U4(google 'Hole in the Dike, Jandee Kruse' for a video readings of the book)...I may just print up a rewrite of the story and slip it into my book with Thomas Locker's illustrations!
