Jennie Wood is a non-binary author, comic creator, musician, and optioned screenwriter. They created the critically acclaimed, award-winning Flutter graphic novel series. Featured in The New York Times, Boston Globe, and on Law & Order: SVU, Flutter was named one of the best LGBTQ graphic novels of 2013 and 2015 by The Advocate. In November 2018, Dark Horse Comics published The Flutter Collection, all three volumes combined into one book. That collection won the Next Generation Indie Book award for best graphic novel of 2019.

Jennie is also the author of the YA novel, A Boy Like Me, which was a Next Generation Indie Book awards finalist, an INDIEFAB Book of the Year finalist, and one of Foreword Reviews’ 10 Best Indie YA novels for 2014. I started reading a Boy Like Me on Saturday. Once I started, I could not put it down and wound up staying in until I finished even though I really did not want the book to end. The characters in the book were so well developed, I felt I knew them personally and became vested in their story. I laughed and cried many times while reading. I always know I love a book when I continue to think about the story a week or so after I finish reading. The story was touching and memorable. I think everyone has experienced times while growing up where they felt different or awkward and can empathize with Peyton's struggles. The story was a good reminder to embrace and cherish what makes each of us unique. I highly recommend this book.

This book is one of my all-time favorite stories about a trans character because unlike most of the other books I've read on the subject this one follows the main character's journey from a young age up until his realization and eventual acceptance of himself as a transsexual person. At first, like me and many other transpeople, Peyton has absolutely no idea who he is or what is going on within himself and we get to read along as he figures it out and comes to understand himself. This is a fictional story but it could have easily been any real transman's story and that what made it so great to me.

I gave it a 5 because the story and writing are good. The story was slightly predictable, but in a good way. I cried a little when it ended because I really connected with the main character and well, I just didn't want the story to end.

I recommend this book to anyone, young adults and adults alike. If you or someone you know is struggling with their identity or self acceptance, or you want a good love story to read give this book a shot.
