I have been one of José's international fans since I heard his early mixtapes. I made all of my friends in Peru listen to the songs, and when he had singles that became worldwide favorites, they always said "ah, Meli, remember when you were the only one who knew of him?"
I am so proud of this man for all that he is. He's an amazing artist, sure. But his humility, love, spirituality and voice (to the world, not singing) is what has kept me following him and supporting him as a fan.
I'm adopted, my biological father is Peruvian, Colombian and Brazilian. I never met them, but I have been reclaiming my roots, of which I am proud. José's music has helped me through moments of self doubt, pain, confusion, but also lifted me up in my happiest moments. I've introduced my husband (furthest thing from cultured on the planet) to him and to Daddy Yankee, who also is an inspiration for me, and after he got to watch this with me (I sobbed the whole time, hello pregnancy hormones!!) he said, "I understand why you love him so much. I understand his voice now."
I struggle with anxiety and depression as well, and to hear someone that I respect so much validate and share their experience with the world felt like a cage has been unlocked around my heart. It is debilitating. I struggle with it daily, and I doubt he will ever read this, but if he does.. "I see you, I believe in you, I hear you and I love you." we're all in this together.
Gracias José, Feliz cumpleaños 🎂
