As to the content of the 11th edition, I think it is execellent. The new version is more visually appealing and readable than the one I used as a scout.
This version of the handbook is the current one and is what should be used for requirements and rules. Unfortunately it is NOT a handbook. Most the information that should be in the book is missing. Instead, where you should find information about the BSA uniform or an identification guide for wildlife, you will find a line that tells you to go to bsahandbook.org. This might be up-to-date or cutting edge, but is completely useless when you are where a Boy Scout should need this information - outside, in the woods. If you want requirements and rules go to bsahandbook.org but if you want information the boys can use go buy an older version of the handbook.
That said, I would strongly, STRONGLY, urge anyone who is purchasing this book for a new boy scout to get the spiral bound edition. The boys will be opening this book and trying to get it to hold open to spots throughout the book ALL. THE. TIME. And most often in the back near the area where he records completed advancements. The binding will break quickly and pages will fall out. If they're the pages signed by leaders as record of completed advancement, and you lose the page, it can spell bad news. The spiral bound version of the handbooks are incredibly handy, for both the boys and the leaders.
As for the book itself and its content, it is a wealth of knowledge, know-how and reference for the outdoorsman, whether they are affiliated with the Boy Scouts or not. Over 100 million boys have been a part of the Scouting program during the last 100+ years, and the benefits of Scouting can't really be overstated in terms of personal growth of a young person. And the key to getting the information for it all is in this book. Read it, love it, live it!
Whether you're a brand new Boy Scout just starting his trail to Eagle, a new leader ready to start helping build the next generation of leaders in this country, or just someone who likes to get outdoors and camp, hike, fish or otherwise enjoy nature's beauty, this book is for you!
This book is well laid out. However, it is a letdown. As other reviewers pointed out, this is the first "Green" handbook and as such It skimps on useful information in order to save the planet, like:
how to make rope p.379
how to tie more than 4 knots p.382
how to stay safe in hazardous weather p.281
various pioneering projects p 393
how to light a fire((using Any method) I was going to give the book 3 stars until I noticed this) p.413
For these topics, the book tells you to look it up on the handbook website. How is that supposed to help a scout who is out of reach of a cell tower, which is very often the case? To me, this is just downright irresponsible. It tells you how to set up the fuel(wood) for a fire, but I'm shocked about the lack of instruction on how to light a fire using any method. and I didn't notice a section on how to stay warm during a sudden rain/snowstorm. Making rope, tying knots and pioneering may not be life or death, but they are things that are supposed to be core skills that any scout should be able to look up at any moment.
I bought the spiral copy. The pages are thick and sturdy, but I can see how they might tear if you aren't careful.
I bought this book on Amazon. It was cheaper at the boyscout website, but I wanted it quickly and have a prime account.Read more ›
As much as we like how it stays open and flat, it just isn't worth the hassle of losing pages.
