My recent reading suggested that phosphates and nitrates are really better reduced by the bioligical filter. So, I removed the Chemipure Elite last Nov. The results, after a few months: no change in these levels or water clarity (which always had a very, very slight haze). Then, reading further, I saw accusations that the vast bulk of Chemipure is simply a low-grade carbon. I replaced the Chemipure Elite with a nominally high-grade carbon with no change in results from when I was using the Chemipure.
Then I tried Purigen. After a few months the readings in ammonia, nitrates and measurable phosphates (organic can't be measured) are still the same. I suspect that I have a well-functioning biological filter. However, I did notice that the Purigen seemed to polish the water to a noticeably clearer degree.
I give Chemipure Elite three stars because, it seems, that it doesn't do anything but, at least, it isn't bad. Maybe it helps stabilize a tank until the biological filter can develop fully. I have switched to Purigen, but have any readers of this review tried removing Chemipure Elite (after long-term use) and actually measured a deterioration in water quality? On the Internet, there are many accusations that Chemipure is a modern day 'snake oil'. I'm really looking for some data-based analysis that says this stuff does something.
If you've never used Chemi-Pure before, you need to determine how many bags you need. I had a Marineland Magnum canister that required 2 bags to fill the carbon canister (it was a tight fit though).
I am a huge fan of using multiple filters with different filter media in them. This enables you to clean one out while leaving the other one undisturbed so as not to harm the good bacteria the tank needs. No matter how good your chemical media is, you need to stock properly, feed judiciously, and perform your tank maintenance. Chemi-Pure is good, but it won't make up for neglect.
This product works very well for keeping nitrates in check and most say keeps the tank sparkling but I have not had the same effect on mine. I bought the chemi-pure for lowering the nitrates...the tank has always been beautifully clear. Now this tank has a bluish hazy look, almost like a chemical toilet. I'm not sure what is happening, all I know is: before I put it in my tank the water was crystal clear! Last night I did a 25% WC and it cleared up nice for a few minutes and went right back to the haze.

It had a brown slime all over it. The bag was also packed in so tight I had to cut the bottle it came in to get it out. It looked as if it was already used.Published 1 month ago by Steve
