The story just dragged for me. The main character is being introduced to a series of men (named after archangels, which made me keep thinking there might be a heavenly connection, but nothing ever comes of this) who she's not interested in dating. Does Mr. Right come along and sweep her off her feet? Nope. Nobody comes along, so I don't know why the picture for this story tries to be cutesy and romance-y.
I don't want to give the ending away in case you are interested in reading this story, but I do want to warn you that the ending is not a happily-ever-after and there is no joy of Christmas to be had. Instead, it was rather depressing. If the intent was to introduce a full length novel to come, I have to say that this story did not make me want to read it at all.
The story is well written but the ending left a little to be desired. I understood a little better when I realized that the author was planning a second book in the series but still feel that there could be a better transition between the two books. I find the author to be very capable but hasn't found the best plot or storyline to demonstrate her craft. I believe it will come and hope she continues to persevere towards that goal.
Like I said, the writing was good and the book was short and there were some cute silly moments that I did find appealing. But this was a very emotional read that broke my heart. I don't think I'll read the other books within the series either due to the lack of a HEA. I haven't read much chick-lit before, so I'm not sure if that is par for the course or not. If so, then I don't think I'll read anything in that genre. I read to be happy, not depressed.
This is a sweet story, but it seems to serve the purpose of introducing the author's Finding Love Series. Rachel's story continues in the next book in the series. I didn't realize this until I reached the end of the ebook. Mama Bird's character was well-developed, but the dates that Rachel goes on seem vague to me. I think it has potential to become a good story in the next one of the series, but I'm undecided if I will buy that one. I gave it 3 stars because it felt incomplete.
