DVD: 05-51361 A Boyfriend for Christmas Kelli Williams (The Practice) is Holly Grant, an idealistic lawyer who gave up on finding Mr. Right in her stocking when she split with her last boyfriend. OSCAR nominee Charles Durning (To Be or Not to Be) plays Santa, who fulfills an old promise by bringing her and another attorney, Ryan Hughes (Patrick Muldoon), together. Due to an earlier misunderstanding, Ryan doesn’t want Holly to know who he is, so when Santa sends him to deliver a Christmas tree, he introduces himself as "Douglas Firewood." His well-meaning white lie threatens to derail a budding romance, and spoil Santa’s plan, in this warm-hearted holiday treat. Running Time: Approx. 100 Minutes Color/NTSC/Stereo

I caught this movie on TV last year and thought it was very cute-- just like those romance novels I read. So, when it came out on DVD, I had to buy it.

She is the girl-next-door type who made a wish a long time ago for a boyfriend for Christmas and has pretty much given up on the wish ever coming true. He is a workaholic attorney whose path happens to cross hers--- and not in the best way. A little mistaken identity and holiday magic help the two fall in love. But, once the true identity is revealed, will all bets be off? You'll have to watch and see.

I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn't found myself thinking, "How did they get so much time off from work during the holidays?" (smile)

A delightful movie. Perfect for a chilly night when you need some help getting over your own bah humbug feelings.

This is a really nice movie and anyone who likes a good romance will really enjoy it. The problem with this dvd is that the digital copyright protection prevents it from being played properly on computers or dvd/vcr combo machines. It works fine on machines that contain only a dvd player. I found this to be extremely frustrating and inconvenient. I wound up with 2 dvd's and they both behaved in the same way.

As a 12 year old, Holly Grant meets Santa and as she thinks she is too old for traditional gifts, she tells Santa she wants a boyfriend for Christmas. He leaves a gift under her tree with a message: she will receive her requested gift in the 20th year "when two hearts are ready". Time then goes to almost 20 years later when Holly is in her 30's and is working for a non-profit organization. Enter Ryan Hughes, a lawyer, who courtesy of Santa winds up being Holly's gift for Christmas. A mistake with a joint client causes Ryan to have a falling out with Holly even though they've never met. When Ryan arrives on Holly's doorstep, he chooses to tell Holly his name is Douglas Firwood to hide his true identity. Over the holiday Holly and "Doug" fall in love as they hold up a charade with her family. Holly's jealous ex-boyfriend tries to expose Ryan as a fraud, and Ryan's lie threatens to spoil his chance for a happy future with Holly. There is one brief comment about sex and a few uses of God's name, but otherwise I would say it is a great family movie.

January 2009 - I just wanted to say that it seems they've fixed the problem. I bought 2 copies of this movie in town here over the Christmas season and they are fine. I'm glad, as it's a good movie.

I work as a clerk in a library, and have customers who ask me for recommendations for good "chick flicks". I always recommend "Straight from the heart", with Teri Polo because it contains a sweet romance with a good story line and doesn't have to use scenes involving a sexual encounter to keep one's interest. This movie, "A boyfriend for Christmas" contains one scene where the young woman asks her potential boyfriend his sexual preferences (he answers with a light response, and the subject is closed), and another where she calls him late one night, and asks him what he is wearing (another light response), but other than that, it is a decent romance story that has a nifty little surprise at the end that I didn't even guess at. This movie is definitely a keeper!

Some of us women would appreciate more movies like the two above mentioned ones, that have a really great romance story without all the sex and profanity. Movie makers, listen up!!

This was such a cute story. When I saw it on TV, I had to have it. As a young girl, Holly Grant asks Santa for a boyfriend. Now, 20 years later and with a failed romance in her past, Holly is wondering why Santa never gave her that perfect guy he promised. When Holly meets the same Santa again, she asks him. Santa sends "Doug Firwood" over to be her "boyfriend for Christmas" and the movie takes off.

Charles Durning is fantastic as Santa. Holly Grant and Doug Firwood make such a cute couple. It's a great "feel good" light-hearted romance and Christmas story and worth watching over and over again. If I tell you any more, I would have to tell the story.

Yes. This IS a chick-flick, sooooo, if you are an insensitive, belching, beer-breath, and otherwise gassy guy, don't bother. You won't like this movie!

Star crossed teens are destined to be joined when one of them makes a Christmas request of Santa..........a boyfriend for Christmas please. Twenty years later the pudding has grown stale, Santa let her down. The closest Holly Grant (Kelli Williams) ever got to a boyfriend was a smarmy louse named Ted (Bruce Thomas). It’s Christmas again and Holly doesn’t care. She’s abandoned her expectations for her crusade as a social worker. One such cause rises her ire when a mother in a custody hearing loses her kids to a foster home because her attorney (Patrick Muldoon as Ryan) fails to appear in court. Unfortunately, he happens to be her Christmas boyfriend long overdue. And although he does reunite the mother and children in time for Christmas, it doesn’t lessen Holly’s opinion of him, sight unseen. She sends him a scathing letter that he happens to overhear as she is dictating it on a phone. Nothing will do but that he should lie to her and pretend to be someone else, in this case, Douglas Firwood as they were in a Christmas tree lot at the time, and that alias made such good sense. Things get complicated when Holly’s ex-boyfriend Ted the louse shows up belatedly deciding they should be together after all. He quickly turns into a crazy stalker who investigates the fictitious Douglas Firwood. With two suitors, will Holly make the right choice?

At worst, it’s just another cute movie from Hallmark.
