#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From “a legal literary legend” (USA Today) comes a gripping thriller of two childhood friends who find themselves on opposite sides of the law as adults, with all of John Grisham’s trademark twists and turns.

For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars. But as teenagers, their lives took them in different directions. Keith’s father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to “clean up the Coast.” Hugh’s father became the “Boss” of Biloxi’s criminal underground. Keith went to law school and followed in his father’s footsteps. Hugh preferred the nightlife and worked in his father’s clubs. The two families were headed for a showdown—one that would ultimately happen in a courtroom.

Life itself hangs in the balance in
The Boys from Biloxi, a sweeping saga rich with history and with a large cast of unforgettable characters.

Don’t miss John Grisham’s latest novel, Camino Ghosts, and the upcoming Framed, his first work of nonfiction since The Innocent Man!

Excellent Look at Biloxi's History

Excellent Look at Biloxi's History
Another incredible Grisham book. It's not like his traditional courtroom dramas - this one reads more like a non-fiction historical account of the Mississippi Coast: the immigrants who shaped the area trying to work for a better life, the rise of the seafood industry, in which Biloxi became known as the Seafood Capital of the World, how families banded together after Hurricane Camille. But the main theme explores the lawlessness and corruption of Biloxi's "Strip" area, the rise of the Dixie Mafia, police corruption, prostitution, strip clubs, drugs, mafia - ALL TRUE FACTS despite Mississippi's reputation for being a Bible-thumping, ultra-conservative state. The coast is definitely a different world, and Grisham does a fantastic job describing the different facets of coast life from the 1940's - 1980's.The main storyline are two best friends who grew up playing baseball together - gotta love the mention of the still-present Biloxi-Gulfport sports rivalry - (and I love how Grisham always mentions the STL Cardinals in his novels) and how the boys would take trips out to Ship Island, go fishing, camp...but as teenagers, their lives take them down completely different paths as they follow their father's footsteps. Both immigrant families from Croatia who settled on "The Point," (my fellow Coasties know exactly where this is) Keith's father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to clean up the Coast, and later became the district attorney. Hugh's father became the "Boss" of Biloxi's criminal underground.I won't share any spoilers! I've read several reviews that say the character development is horrible, that it is difficult to create a strong connection to the characters...I think he did that on purpose to create a sense of uneasiness that would have been felt if you were a part of that seedy underbelly world, not knowing who to trust and always having to watch your back. There is not a lot of dialog between the characters, which is probably why you'll hear people saying this reads more like a history book. But living here in Biloxi, knowing how true it is that the coast is VASTLY different than the rest of the state, always hearing rumors the Dixie Mafia is still around, seeing the casinos (literally from my back deck) and clubs still flourishing, watching the shrimp boats head out from the bay, experiencing and living with all the different cultures and ethnicities here on the coast...I really enjoyed this book!

What I liked was the classic Grisham storytelling. Grisham's no-nonsense approach to succinctly inform the reader of who (characters) they are dealing with is fun and clever, makes me laugh, love it. The point-by-point telling of the story made it easy to read and I flew through the book, love it. Lots of characters spread over a long timeframe made the story quite involved (maybe unnecessarily so) but it all fits together well. Grisham uses subtle (and so subtle) sarcasm as a spice in just the right measure as usual, love it. What the book missed for me was that it had too much telling, and not enough revealing of situations. At times the conflicts and resolution were a bit predictable. For example, this is where The Firm really set a new bar. at the time. In Biloxi, the protagonist never finds himself in an irreversible situation, pinned down in such a way he must find a way out while the reader can't really tell what is coming next. In "The Firm" the plot revealed itself, in "Biloxi" the reader is simply told what happens, and in today's day of true crime, much of what happens in the book isn't all that shocking (not Grisham's fault). Nothing really tricky or clever as far as plot goes. It was a fun and fast read, no regrets. Can't wait for the next one.

** The Boys from Biloxi"** by John Grisham is a gripping legal thriller that delves into the murky underbelly of Biloxi, Mississippi, a city celebrated for its beautiful beaches yet infamous for its corruption and crime. Set against the backdrop of the 1960s and beyond, the story follows childhood friends Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco, whose paths diverge drastically as they grow up in a deeply divided community. While Keith, son of a determined prosecutor, strives to uphold justice and clean up the corruption plaguing the region, Hugh is drawn into his father's world as the "Boss" of Biloxi's criminal underworld, indulging in the nightlife and vice that define their town.

As the boys navigate their opposing worlds, Grisham constructs a richly woven narrative filled with history and a diverse cast of characters. Their friendship ultimately faces a dramatic confrontation in a courtroom showdown, where the stakes are life and death. With well-crafted tension and moral dilemmas, **"The Boys from Biloxi"** explores themes of loyalty, ambition, and the battle between good and evil. Grisham's signature storytelling shines in this captivating saga, offering an intricate look at how destinies can entwine and collide, making it a must-read for fans of legal dramas and crime fiction.

I just finished reading John Grisham's latest book, "Boys from Biloxi."

This book is a return to Grisham's classic legal thriller. I enjoyed the book.

However, I was also a little disappointed. Although it was a fun story to read, it was really not up to my Grisham expectations.

The first few chapters were background... providing a history of the Mississippi coast region in general, and family histories of the two main characters in particular. The background section was written in a narrator style with no dialogue, as one might expect. But then, the rest of the book just sort of continued that same narrator-telling-facts style. I was several chapters in before I realized, "Oh! I guess this is the main story now. Why are we still using narrator voice?"

Accordingly, he failed to really bring the characters alive for me, or to draw me into really caring deeply about them.

Also, there were a few rather obvious storyline flaws. For example, at one point there was a secret meeting between FBI, State Police, and the DA, at a hotel in Hattiesburg. Then halfway thru the meeting, all of a sudden it was in the Biloxi courthouse. I went back and reread it three times thinking I missed something. But, no, there was no change of venue... the venue just abruptly (and mysteriously) changed.

It was a decent story, but just not really up to normal Grisham standards.

Was a good book, just didn't seem totally Grisham in its character development. Still kept me going and not quite predictable. Would recommend it

I could not put this book down! The story was somewhat predictable in parts but still kept me guessing in others. The relationship between the two main families was interesting and had unexpected outcomes at times. This was a solid read that kept me entertained until the end.

A great story of decades of Biloxi, MS history with lots of education along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It makes up for his awful “The Exchange”.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Grisham's best books. Masterful.

Solid, detailed, interesting, educational, spellbinding. All of these apply to the book. The plot is tight, moves along, covers decades of history, and is never boring. Even the ending was carefully crafted and avoided what I first thought was going to be a disappointment. It wasn't. The story in its fullness is believable and realistic: a great effect of what is obviously fiction.

I find this novel to reach similar heights as Mario Puzo's The Godfather.

I find it incomprehensible that the book published just one year later, The Exchange in 2023, contrasts with The Boys from Biloxi like black contrasts with white. In fact, I personally don't believe that The Exchange was written by Grisham. The quality is too low. He must have used a ghost writer and then permitted his name to grace the cover. I am grateful that I read The Boys from Biloxi, even after the severe let-down of The Exchange.

Such a masterful work. Recommended 100%.
