The Boys from Biloxi: A Legal Thriller Hardcover – October 18, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.
Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars. But as teenagers, their lives took them in different directions. Keith’s father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to “clean up the Coast.” Hugh’s father became the “Boss” of Biloxi’s criminal underground. Keith went to law school and followed in his father’s footsteps. Hugh preferred the nightlife and worked in his father’s clubs. The two families were headed for a showdown—one that would ultimately happen in a courtroom.
Life itself hangs in the balance in The Boys from Biloxi, a sweeping saga rich with history and with a large cast of unforgettable characters.

As the boys navigate their opposing worlds, Grisham constructs a richly woven narrative filled with history and a diverse cast of characters. Their friendship ultimately faces a dramatic confrontation in a courtroom showdown, where the stakes are life and death. With well-crafted tension and moral dilemmas, **"The Boys from Biloxi"** explores themes of loyalty, ambition, and the battle between good and evil. Grisham's signature storytelling shines in this captivating saga, offering an intricate look at how destinies can entwine and collide, making it a must-read for fans of legal dramas and crime fiction.
This book is a return to Grisham's classic legal thriller. I enjoyed the book.
However, I was also a little disappointed. Although it was a fun story to read, it was really not up to my Grisham expectations.
The first few chapters were background... providing a history of the Mississippi coast region in general, and family histories of the two main characters in particular. The background section was written in a narrator style with no dialogue, as one might expect. But then, the rest of the book just sort of continued that same narrator-telling-facts style. I was several chapters in before I realized, "Oh! I guess this is the main story now. Why are we still using narrator voice?"
Accordingly, he failed to really bring the characters alive for me, or to draw me into really caring deeply about them.
Also, there were a few rather obvious storyline flaws. For example, at one point there was a secret meeting between FBI, State Police, and the DA, at a hotel in Hattiesburg. Then halfway thru the meeting, all of a sudden it was in the Biloxi courthouse. I went back and reread it three times thinking I missed something. But, no, there was no change of venue... the venue just abruptly (and mysteriously) changed.
It was a decent story, but just not really up to normal Grisham standards.

I find this novel to reach similar heights as Mario Puzo's The Godfather.
I find it incomprehensible that the book published just one year later, The Exchange in 2023, contrasts with The Boys from Biloxi like black contrasts with white. In fact, I personally don't believe that The Exchange was written by Grisham. The quality is too low. He must have used a ghost writer and then permitted his name to grace the cover. I am grateful that I read The Boys from Biloxi, even after the severe let-down of The Exchange.
Such a masterful work. Recommended 100%.
