I am old, and I have way too many CDs. Yet I buy new ones weekly, and when I listen to them, I wonder why. Even if they are really good, they'll never crack my play list, and after a while, they will be forgotten.

Then, along comes Alabama Shakes, to remind me of why I buy new music: So I don't miss something like this. On the first listen, I knew I'd be playing this disk over and over for the remainder of my days.

Experienced listeners will note R&B hooks that date back to the beginning and before, but tempered by jazz, swampwater blues, Americana, and... is that The Strokes? With all these recognizable influences, the songwriting still manages to be fresh. How can people this young understand this much about American music?

With a singer happily described by another reviewer as the love child of Otis Redding and Janis Joplin, Alabama Shakes is the most promising new band I have heard in a long time.

It's pretty transcendent stuff

I know I've heard all of these songs before or at least these types of songs but . . . something's different. It's like all the best elements of music from the likes of the Rolling Stones, Etta James, Janis Joplin, the Beatles, Sonic Youth and many more were somehow transmogrified (sorry, I had to use that word) into new songs in an entirely new way. Brittany Howard brings a raw emotion along with the talent to lift each song up like a wave rising out of the ocean and expressing every high and low with genuine feeling and unbelievable rhythm. The band ain't too shabby either. They do a heck of a job integrating their instruments into Howard's vocals. Without them Howard would still sound pretty good but the band adds a ton of dynamics to the songs. The sound of the guitars on this release are classic and simple. I can imagine the amps used were some type of throwback variety. The drums sound very raw but clear and especially outstanding during the verse/bridge of Rise to the Sun. The bass sounds great and the organ is a perfect addition.

I listen to every song, over and over with the exception of Heartbreaker. For some reason it sounds like meandering circus music. It'd be all right if was about half as long but for what it is I can't get through the whole thing.

If you're thinking of getting Boys and Girls, get it. It's pretty transcendent stuff.

So I am happy with the product but not happy at all with the shipping. I watched the Amazon delivery guy under hand toss the package from 5 feet away from the porch which thudded heavily onto the corner smashing every package inside. Also let me mention that the package were vinyl records... its sad to see the package make it from wherever it came from to get damaged by an under hand toss to my front porch instead of three more steps to set it down. Fortunately all of the records are ok and only the cases holding the records were damaged , unfortunately I need them for a gift exchange tomorrow and cannot not return them or I would. Considering records are something that hold value being in pristine condition it is very concerning receiving them with damaged covers.

I tuned into Alabama Shakes from their rocking track "Always Alright" on the Silver Linings Playbook (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) CD. This CD opens with the addictive "Hold On" with its positive feel about overcoming adversity, "So bless my heart, bless my mind, I got so much to do, I ain't got much time." "I Found You" also pops with a retro sound based in a roots rock mold, "I remember all them days I waited so patiently until God brought someone who's gonna be good to me, and he blessed my soul." As a singer, Brittany Howard pulses huge amounts of emotion into her songs like "Heartbreaker." "Be Mine" is another riveting track with the band giving Howard a punchy backdrop on which she laces her vocals, "All them ladies don't know you like I do, that's why I call you my baby." All tracks are strong including "Rise to the Sun" & the final two tracks "I Ain't the Same" & "On Your Way." This is a band can blow the roof off the house. Don't miss it! Enjoy!

There are plenty of comprehensive reveiews already about this fine disk. I will not attempt to match them, word for word. I just want to say that this disk is completely accessible, & recognizable to those of us of a certain age, yet at the same time entirely fresh & new. Comparisons of Brittany to the Queen of Soul & especially Janis are 100% on point. For me, it is like she is channelling Joplin.
Yeah, this is recorded rough. Obviously, some are disappointed by that. I am able to write it off as "charmingly underproduced." Has anyone ever listened to the old Stax records? Much less going back to Robert Johnson or Ledbelly? I'm OK if they continue to leave the rough edges on, or evolve by providing a crisper recording next. I just can't wait to see what they do next. Please, record again soon.

I am so sorry that I had to return this album due to a technical fault as it is quite remarkable by anyone's standards. They call her the new Janis Joplin but that is to do Brittany Howard a disservice as I believe she reaches a whole other, higher level. And if you think this is one of the finest albums you've ever heard then just listen to the Sound and Colour follow up. I must go out and buy a good copy. Usual fine return policy by Amazon, and as I said before, so sorry to have to return this due to manufacturing error no doubt?

Just returned from Latitude 2012, scrubbed off the mud, had a shave and packed away the camping gear for a few weeks. Let me tell you straight away and in case you don't get it, I am total convert....Alabama Shakes were one of the standouts, it was like someone suddenly flicked a switch after all that laid-back Rufusness. Brittany Howard came on stage looking like she should have been serving in an on-site organic food van but then exploded into a sort of Janis Joplin-Aretha Franklin-Amy Winehouse demon, I have no idea why she wasn't crying throughout the set with the passion she put into it. Soul doesn't even begin to describe it!! It's southern rock, bluesy stuff, reminded me of Youth and Young Manhood before KOL got all commercial. Anyway, bless mobile internet, bless my Amazon app, ordered the vinyl album in the field between acts and got it a couple of days ago. Great stuff (but knocked off 1 star because it isn't ever going to recreate the live thing and the sound quality is good but not the best). Buy this and if you get even 50% of what I saw, you will be happy.

I discovered this band by accident,rummaging around the internet. Had the CD ordered five minutes later. My taste in music is varied and I would describe myself as a sixty year old music fan who has never lost the love of good music, from any genre. To me the obvious attraction was Brittany Howards voice but that would sell the rest of the band short. They play their part fully in this and cook away with the best of them. "Hold on" "I found you" "You ain't alone" "Boys and girls" "Be mine" stand out. I don't know if this is their first album but it is a good start and I will be keeping an eye open for the next one. One thing I have noticed is that they appear to be a very "Live" band. A quick tune into you tube should prove me right. That "Live" sound is not captured so well on the CD. However I have enjoyed listening to it and am now converting my kids. Give the "Shakes" a listen.
