Nick Nowak is the best fictional detective ANY author has created in the last 70 or 80 years, and the characters around him are equally good. The stories are engaging and believable, the mysteries neither repetitive nor absurd, and the writing of very high quality. The ONLY problem with these books -- and it's a big one -- is the pornography: the extremely graphic, physiologically detailed sexual encounters that pop up like annoying app notifications in about every third chapter.
The female readers and writers who have defined and still dominate the gay fiction genre as it exists today seem to require those regular-as-clockwork doses of male-on-male pornography in order to get through the usually negligible story that camouflages them just well enough to let the reader believe she's not really reading pornography. I, as a gay man, neither need nor want to read about gay sex (watching a gay porn video is another matter). To me, those porn episodes are extremely annoying, distract from the otherwise very entertaining story, and ALWAYS require my skimming through the several pages they fill to find where the story resumes.
If Thornton could break away from the female demand for gay porn, while maintaining the very excellent writing that goes into the Boystown series, he could become one of the most successful writers working today, in ANY genre. He has the talent and the skill, if he would just break the female-mandated porn mold he has been stuck in. I hope and pray he will do that.
